All you history buffs out there, this article is for you! Something very old has been discovered in the UAE! On a tiny island west of Abu Dhabi, the oldest known structure in the UAE was uncovered going back 8,500 years. The remains were discovered on the island of Ghagha by Abu Dhabi’s Department of Culture and Tourism.
The basic stone dwellings were most likely home to the UAE’s initial communities. It also implies that Neolithic communities flourished in the UAE before the development of long-distance marine trade. Carbon-14 examination of charcoal particles indicated the age of the structures.
The discoveries on Ghagha Island compel a new understanding of our history and reinforce the deep cultural connections between the people of the UAE and the sea.

“These archaeological finds have shown that people were settling and building homes here 8,500 years ago. The discoveries on Ghagha Island highlight that the characteristics of innovation, sustainability and resilience have been part of the DNA of the inhabitants of this region for thousands of years,” said Mohamed Al Mubarak, Chairman of DCT Abu Dhabi “The finds reinforce an appreciation of history, as well as the deep cultural connections between the people of the UAE and the sea.”
