1. Southern Delta Aquariids
The first meteor shower of the summer season arrives with the Southern Delta Aquariids. This will be visible over the UAE between Wednesday, 29 July and Thursday, 30 July. This annual display is known for producing a steady stream of meteors, with around 15 to 20 shooting stars expected every hour during peak activity.
However, this year’s viewing conditions won’t be ideal. The meteor shower coincides with the Buck Moon. This means bright moonlight will make many of the fainter meteors difficult to see. Experts explain that only the brighter streaks are likely to stand out against the illuminated sky.
- Peak Viewing Time: 11 PM to 4 AM on Wednesday, 29 July and Thursday, 30 July.
2. Perseids Meteor Shower
Widely regarded as the most impressive meteor shower of the year, the Perseids are also among the easiest to spot from the UAE. This year’s peak falls between Wednesday, 12 August and Thursday, 13 August – perfectly timed with one of the darkest phases of the lunar cycle. With very little moonlight interfering, viewing conditions should be excellent if the weather cooperates.
During peak times, skywatchers could witness between 80 and 100 meteors per hour, with the streaks racing through Earth’s atmosphere at around 59 kilometres per second. The Perseids appear every year as Earth passes through the trail of dust and debris left behind by Comet 109P/Swift-Tuttle. It creates one of the brightest and most reliable meteor showers on the calendar.

- Some of the UAE’s best stargazing locations include Al Quaa Desert, Liwa Desert, Jebel Jais and Al Qudra Desert.
- Try to watch between 10 PM and 3 AM, when the sky is at its darkest.
- Arrive at least 20 to 30 minutes early to allow your eyes to adjust naturally to the darkness.
- Lie back and look up rather than focusing on one small area, as meteors can appear anywhere across the sky.
