If Watching The Stunning Skies Light Up, Then You Have To Check Out These Summer Meteor Showers! Dates, Peak Times & Viewing Tips

What Are The Perseids?

The Perseids are one of the most prolific meteor showers of the year and are associated with Comet Swift-Tuttle. With the right conditions, you could spot plenty of shooting stars without needing a telescope or specialist equipment. Dubai Astronomy Group has specifically identified Al Qudra and Al Quaa as authorised locations for independent stargazing. The group has also advised visitors to avoid Al Khatim Desert in Abu Dhabi unless they are attending an organised event.

1. Al Quaa Milky Way Spot, Abu Dhabi

If your priority is dark skies, Al Quaa is the one to know about. Dubai Astronomy Group also lists this location as authorised for independent stargazing. Since it is a remote setting, it means significantly less light pollution than you will find near the UAE’s major cities. The location is known as the Milky Way spot for good reason. On a clear, moonless night, the Milky Way’s galactic core can be seen with the naked eye, creating an impressive backdrop for the Perseid meteor shower.

The only issue is getting there. The drive involves desert terrain, so this is not the place to attempt a midnight adventure in a saloon car. You will need a 4×4 and some desert-driving confidence!

  • Distance: Roughly 90 minutes from Abu Dhabi, around two hours from Dubai
  • Access: A 4×4 is recommended, along with some experience driving in the desert
  • Cost: Free

2. Jebel Jais, Ras Al Khaimah

Want meteor showers with a mountain backdrop? Head to Jebel Jais. The mountain’s elevation can offer clearer conditions away from some of the moisture found closer to the coast, while the higher altitude also makes it a slightly cooler option during the UAE’s hot August nights.

The observation deck sits at around 1,400 metres, while the mountain’s highest point rises above 1,900 metres. There are public rest areas and pull-offs along the winding mountain road. So, you have plenty of options for finding a suitable place to stop! Now, for stargazing, avoid the brightest viewpoints and choose a darker pull-off where possible. Just remember that the more artificial light around you, the harder it will be to spot those faint meteors.

  • Distance: Around two hours from Dubai
  • Access: Sealed road all the way up
  • Cost: Free to access the observation deck and public rest areas

3. Al Qudra Desert, Dubai

For an easy desert stargazing trip, Al Qudra is hard to beat. It is one of the locations specifically named by the Dubai Astronomy Group as authorised for independent stargazing, making it a straightforward choice if you want to watch the Perseids without committing to a lengthy desert adventure. Remember to find a spot away from artificial lights, get comfortable and give your eyes time to adjust before starting your meteor-spotting mission!

Another major bonus is the facilities nearby. Last Exit Al Qudra has food trucks and toilets, which can make the outing considerably easier if you are bringing children or simply do not fancy being completely cut off from civilisation.

  • Distance: About an hour from central Dubai
  • Access: A saloon car is suitable for the main areas
  • Cost: Free

4. Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve, Dubai

You do not always need to drive deep into the UAE’s wilderness for darker skies. Al Marmoom Desert Conservation Reserve is relatively close to Dubai and offers plenty of open desert away from the city’s brightest lights. As the UAE’s largest unfenced conservation area, it offers established access points and a sprawling desert landscape that is well-suited to an evening of stargazing. For the Perseids, look for a quiet area away from artificial lights and settle in for a while rather than expecting to see a meteor the moment you arrive.

  • Distance: Around 45 minutes from central Dubai
  • Cost: Free

5. Mleiha, Sharjah

Mleiha is another strong option if you want dark skies without heading too far from Sharjah. The Mleiha Archaeological Centre regularly hosts organised stargazing experiences that can include expert guidance, telescopes and dining. However, these experiences come at a cost. If you are going independently, the surrounding desert areas, including those around Fossil Rock, offer a chance to enjoy the night sky without paying for an organised experience.

  • Distance: About 40 minutes from Sharjah city
  • Cost: Free for the surrounding desert; organised archaeological centre events are ticketed

6. Wadi Shawka, Ras Al Khaimah

For something a little more rugged, Wadi Shawka offers rocky landscapes and mountain views, but in a much quieter setting after dark. The area is popular with hikers during the day and can make an atmospheric backdrop for meteor watching at night. It’s also one of the most photogenic spots if you’re crazy about stunning backdrops that will elevate your pics!

But keep in mind, the terrain is rocky rather than sandy, so proper footwear is essential. It is also best to stay around the dam rather than wander deeper into the valley after dark, as some areas beyond it are privately owned and boundaries can be difficult to discern at night. In other words, enjoy the scenery, but do not turn your stargazing trip into an accidental off-road expedition.

  • Distance: Around 45 minutes from Ras Al Khaimah city
  • Cost: Free

Best Time To Watch The Perseids

For meteor showers, the late-night and early-morning hours are generally your best bet, with a viewing window of roughly 11 PM to 4 AM offering good opportunities. Do not give up after five minutes if you have not seen anything! Find a comfortable position, put the phone away and give yourself at least half an hour. The darker your surroundings, the better. Move away from artificial lights, allow your eyes to adjust and scan a wide section of the sky rather than focusing on one tiny spot. And yes, the hardest part may simply be resisting the urge to check your phone every 30 seconds.

The Perseids are one of those UAE experiences that cost nothing but can feel pretty magical. Don’t delay!. Pick a dark spot, pack plenty of water, switch off the bright screens and give yourself time to look up.
