What Makes This Symbol Special?
Before we dive into the do’s and don’ts, it’s also important to understand the meaning behind the symbol itself. Launched in March, the symbol was carefully designed to represent both the UAE’s culture and its forward-looking vision. It’s based on the English letter “D”, with two bold horizontal lines running through it. These lines stand for stability and resilience. Two qualities at the heart of the UAE’s financial system! The symbol also draws inspiration from the UAE flag, showing off the country’s national pride and economic strength. Beyond that, its curves and edges are influenced by classical Arabic calligraphy styles like Thuluth and Diwani, beautifully blending tradition with a modern, sleek look.
The Digital Dirham
For online use, the symbol sits inside a circular frame that represents security and continuity. This version uses the UAE’s national colours, making sure that even in the digital space, the symbol stays true to the country’s heritage. The frame also reflects the UAE’s bold vision for digital finance.

How To Use It Properly
Keyboard Placement:
The dirham symbol will be found on the number 6 key.
- For single-language formats, it should be centred.
- For dual-language layouts, place it in the top-left corner.
- Always keep at least 2mm of clear space around it.
Cheques:
- Use the symbol before the number when writing amounts in figures.
- Stick to the same size and weight as the numbers.
- Still write “Dirhams” in full when writing out the amount in words.
Receipts:
- The symbol goes before the number.
- Make sure the font, size, and weight match the text around it.
- Receipts should be in English and right-aligned with proper spacing.
Price Tags:
- Put the symbol right before the price.
- Don’t use both the symbol and “AED” together – only choose one.
- Make sure it’s clear and easy to read, especially in shops.
Dos And Don’ts To Remember
Dos:
- Keep the shape, size, and direction of the symbol consistent.
- Use enough contrast so it stands out clearly.
- Position it to the left of the numbers.
- Give the symbol space to “breathe” with proper spacing.
- Pick either the symbol or “AED” – not both.
Don’ts:
- Don’t squash, stretch, or decorate the symbol.
- Don’t mix the symbol with “AED”.
- Don’t use poor contrast or place it incorrectly.
With these guidelines, the new dirham symbol is set to become a strong, modern, and instantly recognisable part of daily life in the UAE. Be sure to use it correctly at all times!
