Unexpected Mistakes Could Get You Fined

These 10 Unexpected Mistakes Could Get You Fined Up To AED 500K In Dubai!

Did you know chewing gum could get you fined in Dubai?! Now you probably know about Dubai, which is famous for its luxury, spotless streets, and convenient lifestyle. But behind all that glam is a long list of rules that many residents and tourists don’t even realise exist! Unfortunately, some of them are surprisingly easy to break without meaning to, and these everyday habits could end up costing you hundreds… or even thousands of dirhams. So, before you accidentally learn your mistakes the hard way, here are some situations to keep in mind that could get you fined in the city.

Got A High DEWA Bill? Here’s How To Cut Your DEWA Bills In Dubai With These 13 Simple Hacks

1. Chewing Gum On The Metro

Dubai’s Metro rules are stricter than many people realise. Eating, drinking and even chewing gum inside Metro trains or station areas can land you with an AED 100 fine. The RTA maintains strict cleanliness standards across public transport, and yes, gum absolutely counts.

2. Taking Photos Of People Without Permission

This is one of Dubai’s strictest rules and also one of the biggest mistakes residents unknowingly make. Taking photos or videos of people without their consent, especially when they are clearly identifiable, can result in severe penalties under UAE privacy laws. Fines can range between AED 150,000 and AED 500,000, depending on the severity of the situation. The same also applies to filming accidents, emergencies, government buildings, airports, military areas and certain infrastructure sites.

3. Jaywalking

Crossing the road wherever it feels convenient might seem harmless. But in Dubai, it can be a very expensive mistake. Under newer UAE laws introduced in recent years, pedestrians who illegally cross roads with speed limits of 80km/h or more could face fines of up to AED 10,000.

4. Driving A Dirty Car

Leaving your car covered in layers of dust for too long can actually lead to a fine. Authorities consider excessively dirty vehicles a form of visual pollution and, in some cases, a public health issue. Depending on the situation, fines can start from AED 500 and go higher.

5. Sleeping On The Metro Or In Waiting Areas

If you were planning on sneaking in a quick nap during your commute, maybe rethink that plan. Sleeping inside Metro stations, waiting areas or onboard trains can result in an AED 300 fine.

6. Driving A Noisy Vehicle

Love showing off your engine? We totally get it. But Dubai authorities are not fans of excessive vehicle noise. Drivers caught operating overly noisy vehicles can face a fine of AED 2,000 and 12 black points on their licence.

7. Misusing Your Vehicle Horn

Aggressively leaning on your horn during traffic jams might feel satisfying in the moment. But unnecessary or excessive honking can lead to a fine. Drivers caught misusing their horn could face a fine of AED 400 and four black points.

8. No Public Displays Of Affection

While Dubai is more relaxed than many people assume, there are still clear boundaries regarding public behaviour. Going on a first date and briefly holding hands? Don’t worry, it is generally tolerated in tourist-heavy areas. However, kissing or intimate displays of affection in public spaces can still lead to fines, complaints, or legal trouble.

9. Littering While Driving

Now, this goes without saying, but in Dubai, throwing rubbish out of your car window is treated very seriously. Drivers caught littering can receive an AED 1,000 fine along with six black points. Authorities are continuing to address behaviours that affect public cleanliness and safety across the city.

10. Washing Your Car In Public

You might think rinsing your car outside your building is harmless, but in many parts of Dubai, washing vehicles in public spaces is not allowed. Authorities can issue fines starting from AED 500 for washing cars outside designated areas or approved facilities.

These are some pretty easy-to-follow rules. While they are surprisingly specific rules, knowing them can save you from hefty fines and awkward situations. To be on the safer side, it’s best to stay respectful and maybe keep the chewing gum away from the Metro.
