An Amber Alert is a system that notifies the public immediately when a child has been kidnapped. The method was originally used in 1996 in the United States and has subsequently spread to other countries. Instagram said earlier this week that Amber Alerts would be launched on the social media platform, allowing users to be notified of missing children in their area/region and share information with other users.

Since 2015, AMBER Alerts on Facebook has been successful in helping authorities find and quickly locate missing children.
“Instagram is a platform based on the power of photos, making it a perfect fit for the AMBER Alert program,” said Michelle DeLaune, President and CEO at the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children. “We know that photos are a critical tool in the search for missing children and by expanding the reach to the Instagram audience, we’ll be able to share photos of missing children with so many more people.”
According to Instagram, “AMBER Alerts on Instagram (June 1st) will start rolling out today and be fully available in the next couple of weeks in 25 countries: Argentina, Australia, Belgium, Bulgaria, Canada, Ecuador, Greece, Guatemala, Ireland, Jamaica, Korea, Lithuania, Luxembourg, Malaysia, Malta, Mexico, the Netherlands, New Zealand, Romania, South Africa, Taiwan, Ukraine, the UK, the United Arab Emirates and the US. We’re working to expand and bring them to more countries.”
The alerts will include information about the missing child, such as a photograph, description, and location of the alleged kidnapping. Users are encouraged to post the notice to help raise awareness so that the missing youngsters can be found through social media. Amber Alerts will appear on the Instagram feeds of those in the area. Name, age, a photo, and a description will all be included in the alert.
The location of the kidnapping could also be included in the warning, which could aid in the child’s recovery. Additionally, Instagram users will be able to share the alert with their friends, effectively utilising the power of social media. Instagram plans to use the user’s city, IP address, and location services to ensure that the notifications are appropriately targeted. The Amber Alerts feature was created in collaboration with the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children, the United Kingdom’s National Crime Agency, and several other organisations throughout the world.
