Remember the books you read until the pages curled at the corners? Some stories made you laugh, some made you cry, but most of them made you wish you could step right into their worlds. This summer, those stories are jumping off the page and onto the stage as The Hive Summer Theatre Festival 2026 returns to Dubai. This season brings a world of imagination, chaos, comedy, and childhood nostalgia. From rebellious student councils and whimsical Shakespearean forests, this year’s festival promises a packed line-up of performances created by young, budding theatre kids! Here’s everything waiting behind the curtain.

Stories That Leap Off The Page
Back for another year, the festival will run across May and June, and will feature more than 500 young performers presenting over 50 live plays to an audience of around 7,000 people. This year’s theme, Stories Come Alive, centres around books, beloved fictional worlds, and iconic characters many grew up reading about. Every production is inspired by the magic of storytelling and the joy of seeing favourite characters come to life before an audience.
The festival is directed and produced by The Hive, Dubai’s premium performing arts school. The school is known for its Speech and Drama and Communication Skills programmes for children aged four and above. Alongside hosting one of the city’s biggest live theatre experiences for children every year, the school also guides more than 1,000 students through Trinity College London performing arts exams.

The Plays Taking Centre Stage
1. Bookasura
What starts as a normal summer holiday quickly turns into a hilarious adventure when two siblings realise something mysterious is gobbling up all their books. Determined to stop the terrifying Bookasura before every last story disappears, they set off on a mission packed with sibling chaos, clever twists, and plenty of heart. Best suited for audiences aged 4 and above.
2. Alivebrary
Raya would happily spend every day surrounded by books inside her favourite old public library. But when the building faces demolition and shelves begin disappearing, she teams up with Ms. Pinto and a cast of beloved fictional characters to save it. It’s a warm and whimsical story about protecting imagination and the places that keep stories alive. Best suited for audiences aged 5 and above.
3. Matilda
It’s a classic that almost everyone has heard of, and is one of the world’s most adored childhood books. The play follows Matilda Wormwood, an exceptionally bright young girl who feels completely out of place in her television-obsessed family. School introduces her to both friendship and the terrifying Miss Trunchbull, leading to a story full of mischief, courage, and unforgettable moments. Best suited for audiences aged 7 and above.
4. How To Overthrow Your Student Government In Seven Easy Steps
Things spiral very quickly after Jen loses her student council election. With a little help from Julius Caesar, she decides that overthrowing the school government might be the next logical step. What follows is a sharp, funny, and surprisingly clever comedy exploring power, popularity, and just how easily people can get carried away. Best suited for audiences aged 13 and above.
5. Suessification Of A Midsummer Night’s Dream
Imagine Shakespeare’s most chaotic comedy filtered through the wonderfully bizarre world of Dr. Seuss. This playful adaptation transforms the classic story into a rhyming, fast-paced adventure complete with strange creatures, magical forests, mixed-up lovers, and wildly imaginative duels. Best suited for audiences aged 13 and above.
