The UAE’s national railway network, operated by Etihad Rail, is rolling out in carefully planned phases leading up to a full public launch. The inauguration of the Mohammed bin Zayed City Passenger Train Station in Abu Dhabi, led by Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed, marks a major milestone. During the event, senior officials also confirmed that the first passenger services will begin shortly, connecting key emirates in stages. Here’s how the rollout is expected to unfold:
- Introductory Phase (June 30, 2026): Early passenger services begin between Abu Dhabi and Fujairah, offering a preview of operations before the full network opens.
- Public Launch (September 30, 2026): Full passenger services become available, alongside the opening of Dubai Train Station and Al Dhaid Station.
- Al Dhafra Expansion (December 30, 2026): Additional stations across the Al Dhafra region open for commuters.
- Full Network Completion (March 30, 2027): Final stations, including Sharjah, is set to become operational, completing the national route map.
Key Routes & Network Coverage
Once fully operational, the rail system will connect 11 major cities and regions across the UAE. This will create a seamless travel backbone for residents and visitors alike. Key destinations include Abu Dhabi, Dubai, Sharjah, Fujairah, Al Dhaid, Al Dhannah, Al Faya, Madinat Zayed, Mezaira’a, Al Mirfa, and Al Sila. This nationwide connectivity aims to significantly reduce road congestion while offering a faster, more convenient alternative for inter-emirate travel.
Commute Times
The passenger fleet will include 13 high-capacity trains designed for speed, comfort, and efficiency. Each train can carry around 400 passengers and reach speeds of up to 200 km/h. For daily commuters and weekend travellers, these reduced journey times could be a game-changer. That translates into major time savings across popular routes:
- Abu Dhabi to Dubai: approximately 57 minutes
- Abu Dhabi to Fujairah: around 1 hour 45 minutes (105 minutes)
Ticket Prices & Booking Details
Fares are expected to be competitively priced, making rail travel an attractive option for both residents and tourists. Tickets will be available through digital platforms, including the official website and mobile application. Bookings are expected to open from June 23, 2026. On the Abu Dhabi-Fujairah route, pricing will start at:
- Comfort Class: AED 55
- Premium Class: AED 120
