Dubai: 4 Popular Neighbourhoods To Become Car-Free Zones

If your typical way to commute in Dubai is by car, you might want to invest in a metro card (and a good pair of walking shoes) because four popular neighbourhoods are undergoing a major transformation. In the near future, Al Fahidi, Abu Hail, Al Karama, and Al Quoz Creative Zone will become entirely car-free! The main goal of this significant change is to enhance residents’ quality of life by making public spaces more walkable, sustainable, and vibrant! While your commute to these areas might take longer because of all the walking/cycling, at least you won’t be stuck behind the same car for 20 minutes. If you call any of these neighbourhoods home, then keep reading to know all the important details about the changes.

The announcement was made by H.H. Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Deputy Prime Minister. He highlighted that the goal is to reduce reliance on cars and create urban spaces where people can walk, bike, and socialise freely. This change ties in with the Dubai 2040 Urban Master Plan, which focuses on enhancing infrastructure, sustainability, and community well-being.

And with that, Dubai proves once again that it’s a city ready to push boundaries and give you an ever-evolving experience. As no official dates have been confirmed for the start of these car-free zones, stay tuned to Gulf Buzz as the journey to making Dubai a more walkable and well connected city progresses!
