A Global Selection That Truly Travels
This year’s lineup features 27 films competing in the festival’s Competition section. And they span an incredible mix of regions and cultures. Expect moving and eye-opening stories from places like Zambia, Ecuador, Malta, Lebanon, Palestine, and the UAE, just to name a few.
The programme also highlights films like Carissa (2024), a heartfelt coming-of-age drama set in South Africa’s rugged Cederberg mountains. And adding even more depth are five short films created through the SFP Short Film Production Grant, showcasing new voices nurtured and supported by the festival itself.
Spotlight On A Pioneering Filmmaker
Every edition of SFP dedicates a special spotlight to a filmmaker whose work has left a lasting impact, and this year the Director in Focus is none other than Jocelyne Saab (1948–2019). Known for her strong political voice and experimental editing style, Saab used cinema to document real struggles and human stories.
Festival-goers can catch two of her most memorable features — Dunia, Kiss Me Not on the Eyes (2005) and Once Upon a Time in Beirut (1995). Her short documentary Palestinian Women (1974) will also be screened, followed by a thoughtful conversation with director and producer Mohanad Yacubi and Mathilde Rouxel, president of the Jocelyne Saab Association.
Hands-On Learning Through Film Restoration
Adding to the celebration of Saab’s work, the festival is offering an intensive workshop focused on film restoration. Participants will get hands-on experience working with 16mm footage from Saab’s own archive, learning essential skills that help preserve cinema history. This workshop is organised in collaboration with the Jocelyne Saab Association and is perfect for anyone passionate about safeguarding film heritage.
A New Stage For Rising UAE Talent
Debuting at SFP8 is First Takes, a brand-new segment designed especially for UAE-based students and fresh graduates. This initiative gives young filmmakers the chance to showcase their experimental short films on a real festival platform. They’ll also join a roundtable chat that dives into the creative opportunities and real-world challenges of making films in the UAE. A fantastic stepping stone for anyone starting out in the industry.
Two Unique Venues, One Inspiring Festival
The screenings this year will take place across two venues in Sharjah. First is Mirage City Cinema, the charming open-air theatre located in the heart of the historical quarter. An atmospheric setting that adds magic to every screening. Films will also be shown at VOX Cinemas in City Centre Al Zahia, giving festival-goers a modern and comfortable cinematic experience.
