Free Things To Do Around Dubai
1. Dubai Fountain Show
This one’s a classic for a reason, and now with it’s revamped look, it’s gotten even better. Every half and hour, from sunset onwards, right at the base of the Burj Khalifa, the Dubai Fountain bursts to life with music, lights, and water dancing up to the sky. It’s dramatic, beautiful, and completely free to watch. Find a good spot along the Waterfront Promenade outside Dubai Mall, and get ready for pure magic.
2. Explore Downtown & Dubai Mall
You don’t have to be shopping to enjoy Dubai Mall. Wander around and soak in the sights. From the indoor waterfalls, to the gigantic aquarium tank you can admire from the outside, and even art installations scattered throughout the mall. Step outside to the promenade for jaw-dropping views of the Burj Khalifa.
3. Tour Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood – AKA Old Dubai
Craving a slice of history? Head to Al Fahidi Historical Neighbourhood in Bur Dubai, where life slows down just a little. The narrow alleys, wind-tower houses, and art galleries will take you straight back to what Dubai looked like before the skyscrapers. Stroll around, peek into small museums, and stop for a cup of traditional Arabic coffee. Then, make your way to the nearby Al Seef waterfront for a mix of old and new. It’s ridiculously pretty, especially at sunset.
4. Wander Through The Souks
Gold that glitters, spices that smell like heaven, and rows of colourful textiles. Welcome to the souks of Deira. Even if you’re not planning to shop, walking through the Gold Souk and Spice Souk is a full-on experience. Chat with the vendors (they love a good bargain banter), take in the scents and sounds, and get lost in the buzzing atmosphere. It’s chaotic, vibrant, and oh-so-Dubai.
5. Soak Up The Sun At Dubai’s Beaches
Beach days don’t have to come with resort fees. Dubai’s public beaches are stunning and totally free. Head to Jumeirah Public Beach for those postcard-perfect Burj Al Arab views, or chill at The Beach in JBR for a lively vibe with street performers and food trucks nearby. If you’re after something more relaxed, Kite Beach is perfect for a casual swim, a jog, or even a game of volleyball. And if you’re a night owl, Umm Suqeim Beach offers night swimming under the stars.
6. Spot Flamingos At Ras Al Khor
Yes, you read that right. There are flamingos in Dubai! Just a few minutes’ drive from Downtown, the Ras Al Khor Wildlife Sanctuary is home to flocks of pink flamingos (and over 400 species of birds). Head to one of the free viewing platforms, grab your camera, and enjoy this peaceful little pocket of nature right next to the city skyline. It’s one of those “wait, is this really Dubai?” moments.
7. Sunset Strolls At Dubai Marina
If the city had a catwalk, it would be the Marina Promenade. Take a sunset walk along the water surrounded by skyscrapers, luxury yachts, and waterfront cafés. It’s lively, gorgeous, and totally free. You can even keep walking to Bluewaters Island for more views and a peek at Ain Dubai. Whether you’re solo, on a date, or just hanging with friends – this spot never disappoints.
8. Artsy Vibes At Alserkal Avenue
Looking for something a little more creative? Alserkal Avenue in Al Quoz is Dubai’s artsy playground. This former warehouse district is now home to free art galleries, street murals, pop-up installations, and indie cafés. You might even stumble upon a free movie screening or workshop. It’s the perfect place to channel your inner creative, or just look cool doing it.
9. Desert Adventures Without The Price Tag
You don’t need a fancy tour to enjoy the desert! Just drive out to Al Qudra Lakes for a peaceful escape. Bring your own food, watch the sunset, and maybe even spot some oryx wandering around. If you’re into photography, head to the Big Red Dunes near Lahbab for that dramatic golden sand shot. Bonus – the stargazing out there is unreal.
10. Explore Hatta Heritage Village
Up for a mini road trip? Hatta Heritage Village is about an hour and a half away and feels like a completely different world. Think stone houses, watchtowers, and stunning mountain views. It’s free to enter and gives you a glimpse into Dubai’s traditional past. You’ll leave with a new appreciation for how far this city has come, and probably a full camera roll too.
