This week Abu Dhabi taxis will be introducing a new payment option. Card payment will now be an option to pay for your fare! Previously, you could only pay via cash or by scanning a QR code. Taxi passengers in Abu Dhabi can pay by tapping their card or placing it into the card reader attached to the metre and punching in their PIN.

Al Ghazal Taxis and Cars Taxis are the only two cab companies in Abu Dhabi that accept credit cards right now. As part of an emirate-wide trial, they’ve dispatched a handful of cabs that accept credit cards. Though, more companies are planning to integrate card payment capabilities into their systems. Other intriguing features of the metre include the ability to see how much time you have spent waiting, whether at lights or in traffic, which might be useful if you’re running late for an appointment.
