The jersey Diego Maradona wore when he scored his ‘Hand of God’ goal in 1986 was sold at auction for AED32 million (£7.1 million). It is presently the world’s most valuable piece of sports collectables. Argentina advanced to the World Cup semi-finals when Maradona scored his first of two goals with his hand. And he characterised the goal as being scored “a little with the head of Maradona, and a little with the hand of God”.

While his ‘Hand of God’ goal was unethical, his follow-up goal is one of the finest of all time. The jersey was handed to England player Steve Hodge when he exchanged football shirts with Maradona following the match 36 years ago. And, after years of claiming that he’d never sell the iconic shirt, he has finally done it. At an auction, it fetched a whopping £7.1 million. Maradona’s shirt was expected to fetch between £4m and £6m, but following a frenzy of last-minute bids, the price jumped to £7,142,500.
