Eid is meant for celebration and family time. But let’s face it, we’ve all been through those unfortunate moments when we’ve had to work while some of our colleagues or friends enjoy their holidays (we get it, it hurts!) While it sucks having to drop into an almost-empty office, UAE labour laws are set to ensure you are legally entitled to extra pay or a substitute day off. If you’re asked to clock in during your break, here’s what you need to know.

Eid Al Fitr 2026 Dates
For private sector employees, Eid Al Fitr 2026 is expected from Thursday, 19 March to Saturday, 21 March. If Ramadan completes 30 days, the holiday could extend to Sunday, 22 March, giving employees a four-day weekend depending on the official confirmation. Public holidays are set by the government and apply to both private and public sector workers.
Two Ways Employers Can Compensate Employees
Private-sector workers are protected under UAE labour law. Which requires companies to compensate staff working on public holidays. Employees have two main options:
- Compensatory Day Off: You get a substitute rest day for every public holiday worked, in addition to your regular annual leave.
- Enhanced Holiday Pay: You receive your normal daily wage plus at least a 50% premium. Some contracts may offer more.

The employer decides which method applies. However, both must meet the legal minimum standards. In simple terms, you cannot be asked to work on a public holiday without proper compensation. Employers must either give you an extra day off or pay at least 50% more than your regular wage.
What To Do If You’re Not Properly Compensated
If you work during Eid and don’t receive the legal pay or a substitute day off, first raise it with your employer. If the issue isn’t resolved, you can escalate it to the labour authority. The Ministry of Human Resources & Emiratisation reviews complaints and mediates between employees and employers.
This Eid, while the country comes together to celebrate, make sure your hard work is recognised too. And as always, keep following Gulf Buzz to stay informed and get tips like these!
