UAE Permits Return For Expats Abroad With Expired Visas

If you’ve been worrying about an expired UAE residency visa while stuck overseas, here’s some welcome news. The UAE has rolled out a temporary measure allowing certain residents to return. This applies to residents even if their visas expired while they were abroad. It’s a much-needed breather for expats who couldn’t make it back due to travel disruptions. Curious to know more? Keep reading for all the details.

Who Is Allowed To Return & Entry Requirements

The decision applies to UAE residents who were abroad and whose residency permits expired on or after 28 February 2026. These residents were unable to return to the UAE due to airspace closures or suspended flights, circumstances that were entirely beyond their control.

Under the new measure, eligible residents do not need to apply for a new entry permit to re-enter the UAE. The temporary policy remains in effect from 28 February until 31 March, 2026. This gives residents a limited window to return to the country without additional entry visa procedures. After arriving, they will be able to complete the necessary steps to regularise their residency through official channels.

No Fines For Overstaying Abroad

Authorities have also clarified that these residents will not be penalised with fines for visa expiry while they are stuck outside the UAE. Since the delays were caused by unexpected travel disruptions, the government has allowed affected residents to resolve their status without facing financial penalties.

Introduced Due To Exceptional Circumstances

Senior officials explained that the move was introduced in response to uncontrollable travel disruptions affecting residents abroad. The temporary measure reflects the country’s flexible approach to administrative procedures during unusual global situations. It allows residents to return safely and then sort out their documentation without unnecessary stress.

How The Process Works

Eligible residents can travel back to the UAE before 31 March 2026 without applying for a new entry permit. Once they arrive, they will be able to update or regularise their residency status through the usual official procedures. The initiative was announced by the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Ports Security (ICP) as part of efforts to simplify procedures and support residents affected by unexpected travel barriers.

Expats who were stuck abroad finally have a small window to get things back on track. If you or someone you know falls under this category, it might be time to start planning that trip back. And of course, stay tuned to Gulf Buzz for all the latest updates.
