If you’ve ever shared a brand collab, posted about a gifted meal, or promoted a service online, there’s a new rule you CANNOT ignore. From 31 January, anyone posting advertising or promotional content on any social media platforms across the UAE, whether paid or unpaid, must have an official UAE Advertiser Permit. The requirement was introduced last year and is now fully in effect. This means that creators, influencers, and even casual promoters need to ensure they’re compliant. Who Needs The UAE Advertiser Permit?
A permit is required for any individual creating social media advertising content, regardless of whether Dirhams are involved. The rule applies to UAE citizens, residents and visitors, with different fees and validity periods depending on your status.
This includes:
- Brand partnerships
- Complimentary products or meals in exchange for coverage
- Promoting services, events or real estate
- Any form of sponsored or promotional posting
Are There Any Exemptions?
Yes! And this part matters, because you do not need a permit if you’re:
- Promoting your own business or personal services
- Advertising a company you fully own using your personal account
Additionally, there are also exemptions for individuals under 18 who post content related to education, sports, culture or awareness initiatives. Those under 18 can post content as long as it falls within approved age classifications.
How Much Does The Advertiser Permit Cost?
For Citizens And Residents
- FREE for the first three years
- Valid for 12 months, with annual renewal required
- From year four onwards: AED 1,000 per year
For Visitors
- AED 500 for a permit valid for three months
- Renewable at AED 500 per renewal
How To Apply For A Social Media Advertiser Permit
UAE residents, you’ll need two things:
- A Trade License For Electronic Media
This must be issued by a relevant local authority. There are several license options available, and applications can be completed online or in person at designated service centres. Fees typically start from around AED 1,100. - A Good Conduct Certificate
- In Dubai: issued by Dubai Police for AED 220
- In other emirates: issued via federal channels for AED 50
Once you have both documents, you can submit your application through the portal on the official National Media Authority website. Applications are usually reviewed within three working days after all documents are submitted.
Permits for Visiting Content Creators
Visitors must apply for a Visiting Advertiser Permit. This cannot be done independently. Instead, registration must be handled through a licensed advertising or talent management agency that is authorised to operate in the UAE and approved by the relevant authorities.
What Happens After Your Permit Is Approved?
Once issued, permit holders must follow strict content and publishing rules. Failure to comply could result in penalties or suspension of advertising privileges. The rules include:
- Following approved media and content standards
- Ensuring all advertising partners are legitimate entities
- Displaying the permit number clearly on social media accounts
- Only posting ads from accounts officially registered and linked to the permit
- Not allowing third parties to advertise through your account
- Securing additional approvals if required under other applicable laws
