From jaw-dropping “Blood Moons” to some of the brightest meteor showers we’ve seen in years, UAE’s skies have plenty in store for us this year. 2026 Astronomical Event Calendar
JANUARY
Meteor Showers & Lunar Events:
- January 3–4, 2026 – Quadrantid Meteor Shower Peak
One of the year’s strongest meteor showers, active from late December to January 12. Peaking the night of January 3 and early January 4. Best seen in dark skies just before dawn.
- January 3, 2026 – Full Moon (Wolf Supermoon)
The first full moon of the year, appearing slightly larger and brighter due to its closer distance to Earth (supermoon).
Planetary Events
- January 10, 2026 – Jupiter at Opposition
Jupiter is opposite the Sun in the sky, making it the brightest and closest it will appear all year.
- January 19, 2026 – Beehive Cluster (M44) Well-Placed for Viewing
The Beehive star cluster in Cancer is well positioned for evening viewing.
- January 23, 2026 – Moon–Saturn Conjunction
The Moon appears close to Saturn in the western sky after sunset.
FEBRUARY
Solar Events
- February 17, 2026 – Annular Solar Eclipse
An annular solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes in front of the Sun but does not completely cover it, creating a “ring of fire.” The path of annularity passes over Antarctica and the southern oceans. Visibility from the UAE is extremely limited or not visible.
MARCH
Lunar Eclipses
- March 3, 2026 – Total Lunar Eclipse (Blood Moon)
The Moon passes fully into Earth’s shadow, turning a deep red colour. This eclipse is visible from regions experiencing night-time during the event, and visibility from the UAE is possible depending on local timing.
APRIL
Meteor Showers
- April 22–23, 2026 – Lyrid Meteor Shower Peak
An annual meteor shower producing fast and bright meteors. Best seen after midnight under dark skies.
MAY
Meteor Showers
- May 5–6, 2026 – Eta Aquarid Meteor Shower Peak
A strong meteor shower known for fast-moving meteors, originating from Halley’s Comet. Best viewed before dawn.
JUNE
Planetary Conjunctions
- June 9, 2026 – Venus–Jupiter Conjunction
Venus and Jupiter appear very close together in the evening sky. Creating one of the brightest planetary pairings of the year.
JULY–AUGUST
Meteor Showers
- July 31–August 1, 2026 – Southern Delta Aquariids Meteor Shower Peak
A moderate meteor shower best viewed from the Southern Hemisphere and equatorial regions, including the UAE.
- August 12–13, 2026 – Perseid Meteor Shower Peak
One of the most popular and reliable meteor showers, producing bright meteors and fireballs.
Lunar Eclipses
- August 28, 2026 – Partial Lunar Eclipse
Part of the Moon enters Earth’s shadow. This eclipse is visible from many parts of the world, including regions of the Middle East depending on local timing.
OCTOBER
Planetary Events
- October 4, 2026 – Saturn at Opposition
Saturn is opposite the Sun in the sky and at its brightest and closest point to Earth for the year.
- October 5, 2026 – Moon–Mars Conjunction
Mars appears close to the Moon in the pre-dawn sky, creating a striking visual pairing.
NOVEMBER
Meteor Showers
- November 17–18, 2026 – Leonid Meteor Shower Peak
A well-known annual meteor shower. Occasionally producing meteor storms, best viewed after midnight.
DECEMBER
Meteor Showers
- December 13–14, 2026 – Geminid Meteor Shower Peak
One of the strongest and most reliable meteor showers of the year, producing slow, bright meteors.
- December 22, 2026 – Ursid Meteor Shower Peak
A lesser-known meteor shower that peaks near the winter solstice.
Lunar Events
- December 24, 2026 – Supermoon (Full Moon)
A full moon occurring near perigee, appearing larger and brighter than average. Sometimes referred to as a “Christmas Eve Supermoon.”
