It is proclaimed to be the “world’s first zero-gravity vertical city” that will have “zero cars, zero pollution and zero carbon emissions”.
Saudi Arabia crown prince Mohammed bin Salman, who is the chairman of the NEOM board of directors, announced the designs of ‘The Line.’ The news was revealed on Monday July 25.
The Line is a civilizational revolution that puts humans first, providing an unprecedented urban living experience while preserving the surrounding nature. It redefines the concept of urban development and what cities of the future should look like.
The announcement revealed the most important characteristics of The Line. It is only 200 meters wide, 170 kilometers long and 500 meters above sea level.
The Line will eventually accommodate 9 million residents and will be built on a footprint of 34 square kilometers, which is unheard of when compared to other cities of similar capacity.
This in turn will reduce the infrastructure footprint and create never-before-seen efficiencies in city functions. It’s ideal climate all year round will ensure that residents can enjoy the surrounding nature when traveling on foot.
Residents will also have access to all facilities in The Line within a five-minute walk. This will be in addition to a high-speed rail with an end-to-end transit of 20 minutes.
That’s not all. The highlight for me is that The Line NEOM developments are set to challenge the traditional flat, horizontal cities by promoting urban living with nature in a vertical design.
The city will function on 100 percent renewable energy, prioritizing the well-being and health of its future residents. It puts nature ahead of development and will contribute to preserving 95% of NEOM’s land.
