Backpacks are packed, alarms can no longer be snoozed, and the school run is officially back! As the new academic year begins across the UAE, drivers are preparing for heavier traffic (trust me, we’re all dreading it). Especially around schools during drop-off and pick-up hours, the traffic can get challenging. While school runs can test anyone’s patience, one rule always applies: children come first. From following slower speeds to stopping for school buses, these rules aren’t just about avoiding fines, they’re about keeping young lives safe. Keep reading for all the RTA driving safety tips to help you drive safely around school zones and avoid fines!

1. Slow Down In School Zones
Most school areas have reduced speed limits of 30 to 40 km/h. Always watch for signage and ease off the accelerator. Speed limits near schools are strictly enforced and if not followed, these are the fines you’ll be slapped with:
- Exceeding by up to 40 km/h: AED 700
- Exceeding by up to 20 km/h: AED 300
- Exceeding by up to 30 km/h: AED 600
2. Always Stop For School Buses
If a school bus extends its stop sign, you must come to a complete stop and keep at least five metres away. Penalties for not following this rule include an AED 1,000 fine + 10 black points
What To Do When A School Bus Displays A Stop Sign:
- Single-lane roads: Vehicles in both directions must stop
- Multi-lane roads: Vehicles in the same direction must stop

3. Do Not Overtake Or Tailgate A School Bus
School buses have large blind spots. Which means the driver may not see you if you’re too close. Safest bet to avoid an accident is to keep your distance at all times.
4. Use Designated Pick-Up And Drop-Off Zones
Stick to designated school pick-up and drop-off areas designed to keep traffic moving safely. Random stops slow traffic and put children at risk.
5. Don’t Stop Across The Street From A School
While this may sometimes be convenient to avoid traffic, it forces children to cross traffic. The safest option is to utilise the designated drop-off and pick-up zones.
6. Keep Emergency Lanes Clear
Emergency lanes must stay open for ambulances and response vehicles. Blocking them can delay life-saving help.
7. Park Responsibly Near Schools
Avoid illegal parking, double parking, parking in People of Determination spots or stopping in no-parking zones.
- Illegal parking fine: AED 500
8. Stay Alert For Sudden Movements
Children can be unpredictable. They tend to run, change direction, or cross unexpectedly, especially near buses and school gates.
9. Avoid Using Your Phone In School Zones
Distracted driving in school zones is extremely dangerous.
- Penalties for using a phone while driving is AED 800 fine + 4 black points
10. Follow Crossing Guards’ Instructions
Always obey crossing guards who are responsible for managing student movement.

Other Traffic Violation Fines To Keep In Mind
- Illegal Parking Near Schools: AED 500 fine for blocking traffic or stopping in no-parking zones.
- Distracted Driving (Phone Use): AED 800 fine and 4 black points.
- Misusing The Horn Or Loud Sounds: Penalty AED 400 fine and 4 black points.
