Well, so it’s over! Allegedly. The UAE’s official peak summer period, those scorch-your-eyebrows-off temperatures between July 29 and August 10, has officially wrapped up. Drumroll! You may now breathe a sigh of relief…finally! These dates aren’t plucked out of thin, sweltering air. They’re linked to the rising of the Al Mirzam star (also known as Sirius), which in weather folklore signals the arrival of the samum. Yup, those hot desert winds that make you wonder about your sanity when planning that impromptu walk outside in August.
And peak it did. On August 1, Al Ain’s Sweihan recorded 51.8°C, which is the kind of number that makes you wonder whether you should start baking cookies on your car bonnet for fun.

“The End Of UAE Summer & High Temperatures”, But Is The Weather Really Changing?
If you were imagining a magical, overnight transformation, one minute you’re melting into the pavement, the next you’re Instagramming hail, I hate to break it to you. Dubai is still clocking highs of 43°C this week, Abu Dhabi is sizzling at 44°C, and the internal areas? A spicy 48°C. Not exactly the best weather in UAE, after all, I guess.
However, the National Centre of Meteorology has dangled a tantalising carrot in front of us: rain. Showers are predicted until early this week, which might knock the temperatures down a smidge. Think of it as nature handing you a cold flannel while still keeping the heater on.
UAE Summer Fatigue Is Real
It’s not just the weather apps groaning under the strain. People are too. Many UAE residents have been campaigning for remote work during these summer months, arguing that commuting in this heat feels like running a marathon in a hairdryer. Doctors agree: they’ve seen a spike in heat-related emergencies and have been shouting from the rooftops (well, maybe from shaded hospital corridors) about drinking electrolytes and staying indoors when possible.
Rain, Hail And All Things Nice – A Respite From The High Temperatures
Despite the doom-and-gloom thermometer readings, we’ve had some quirky summer moments. Rain, and even hail, has made surprise appearances across the country. Fujairah, Al Ain, Sharjah, Abu Dhabi…they’ve all had their “wait, is this August?” moments. In fact, the NCM’s forecast promises that some parts of the country could keep seeing rain until Tuesday, August 12. One storm in Al Ain even carpeted the desert with chunky hailstones, making it look like nature had gone rogue with a beanbag stuffing.

In one clip shared by Storm Centre, a man is seen holding hailstones like precious jewels before passing them to his friend, probably the only time in August that holding ice outdoors feels natural. Reports confirmed hail falling over Shawkah, Al-Musayli, and Fali. Another video showed wadis in the area overflowing like a desert spa gone rogue, and my personal favourite? Two camels just standing there in the middle of a downpour, looking utterly bemused by the whole situation. While these moments of cool relief have brought pure joy to residents longing for winter picnics and beach days without heatstroke, the NCM warns that high temperatures will still linger for a while.
So yes, peak summer is officially over, but let’s not break out the jumpers yet. The next few weeks will still be a sauna with occasional showers. But hey, at least we can say we’ve made it through the worst… and survived to complain about it another day.
