If you’re a drone owner in the UAE, some big changes have just been announced, and I’m here to keep you updated with them. These new rules around drones are designed to improve safety and ensure that everyone operates drones responsibly. Come with me, and I’ll break down all the important details you need to know.
How Check If Your Drone Permit Is Invalid
If your personal or commercial drone already has a registration certificate, don’t think you’re out the water just yet. Unfortunately, all certificates issued before January 6, 2025 are no longer valid. This update comes from the General Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA). Might have felt really good entering into the New Year with all your ducks in order, but it seems like this one of the few times where being organised didn’t pay off. If your drone registration certificate is dated before January 6th, you’ll have to apply for a fresh new permit. But the good news is that you can do this quickly and easily through the UAE Drones app.
Does The Partially Lifted Drone Ban Apply To Dubai?
On January 7th The Ministry of Interior announced a partial lift of the drone ban, that has been in place since 2022. And while this news came as a relief for many drone enthusiasts in UAE, the ones in Dubai are still left hanging. That’s right, The Dubai Civil Aviation Authority confirmed that drones cannot be used recreationally in the city until further notice.
What You Need To Know Before Operating Your Drone In UAE
The new rules don’t just stop at registration. There are some important steps you’ll need to follow before flying your drone:
- Remote Identification System: All drones must have a system that allows them to be remotely identified.
- Use the UAE Drones App: The app must be used every time you operate your drone.
- Training Certificate: You’ll need to complete a training course at a GCAA-accredited centre to receive a certificate.
- Product Status Statement: This document must be requested from the Ministry of Industry and Advanced Technology to confirm the product’s compliance.

How To Get Started
If you’re ready to get your drone flying legally, follow these steps:
- Download the UAE Drones app.
- Submit your new application for a registration certificate.
- Complete the required training course and obtain your certificate.
- Ensure your drone is equipped with a remote identification system.
- Follow all guidelines in the app while flying your drone.
