6 Major Changes Coming Into Affect This Winter In UAE

1. The Single-Use Plastic Ban Expands

Dubai is taking its final step toward a full single-use plastic ban on January 1, 2026. Starting that day, plastic plates, bowls and cutlery will no longer be allowed. This completes a gradual rollout that began with plastic bags in 2024 and continued with styrofoam items in 2025. The move matches nationwide rules — the UAE will also ban the import, production and trade of single-use plastics on the same day.

2. Free Wi-Fi Onboard Emirates Flights

Emirates is rolling out free, ultra-fast Starlink Wi-Fi on all flights. The upgrade starts with Boeing 777s from November 21st, 2025 onwards and will reach the entire fleet by mid-2027. Soon, you’ll be able to watch shows, play games, chat, work, scroll, and even take calls on both your seatback screen and your own phone. Finally, airplane mode won’t feel so limiting.

3. Driverless Taxis Are Hitting Dubai Roads

Dubai’s first self-driving taxis will be on the streets by the end of 2025. You’ll be able to book one through the Uber app, and while there will be a safety driver at first, full driverless rides are expected by 2026. Dubai’s long-term plan? Making 25% of all public transport trips fully autonomous by 2030.

4. UAE and Bahrain to Trial a One-Stop Travel System

A new one-stop travel experience is coming soon. At a recent GCC meeting, officials confirmed that the UAE and Bahrain will pilot a single-checkpoint travel system. The exact rules will be finalised by the end of 2025. This could mean passengers (like Emiratis flying from DXB to Bahrain) will clear passport control and security only once, and won’t need extra checks upon landing. A huge time-saver for frequent regional travellers.

5. Dubai Kids Get Almost A Month Off School

Students across Dubai are about to enjoy an extended winter break at the end of 2025.
Following a calendar update from the UAE Ministry of Education, all private and public schools following the international curriculum now align on holidays. Kids will finish their last school day on Friday, December 5, and won’t return until Monday, January 5, 2026. Talk about a full month of holiday bliss.

6. 2026 Declared the Year of the Family

The UAE has announced that 2026 will be the official Year of the Family. Every year since 2016 has had a national theme, shaping government initiatives. After a year focused on Community in 2025, the upcoming theme will celebrate the family as the heart of society, with new policies and programmes expected throughout the year.
