Which Roads Are Affected?
The two highways with updated speed limits are:
- Abu Dhabi–Sweihan Road (E20): Speed reduced from 120kmph to 100kmph
- Sheikh Khalifa bin Zayed International Road (E11): Speed reduced from 160kmph to 140kmph
These two routes are among the busiest in the region, connecting important areas across Abu Dhabi. The reduced limits are expected to make the roads safer and possibly help lower accident rates over time.
Why The Change Matters
If it wasn’t obvious already, but lowering speed limits helps in preventing accidents, reducing traffic risks, and making the roads safer for everyone. Even a small drop in speed can make a big difference in how much time drivers have to react in unexpected situations. With many drivers using these highways daily, the new limits could encourage more cautious driving habits, and that’s something both the public and authorities can get behind.
Abu Dhabi Speed Rules
And please keep in mind when driving on Abu Dhabi roads that speed rules are different than in Dubai. If the speed limit says it is 100kmph you must not go beyond that set speed. Unlike in Dubai where there is a buffer of an extra 20kmph above the speed limit, Abu Dhabi does not permit this.
So, if you regularly use the E20 or E11, make sure to adjust your driving habits starting Monday, April 14.
