Let’s all take a collective moment to pause mid-scroll because the Dubai Fountain – yes, the Dubai Fountain, the one that shoots water with more drama than a Bollywood climax – is currently off-duty. No, it’s not on vacation in the Maldives. It’s undergoing a major glow-up, and frankly, it’s about time. So before you begin panicking about how you’ll impress your out-of-town guests without choreographed water ballet this winter, here’s everything you need to know. And trust me, by the time it reopens, this diva of Downtown Dubai is going to be bigger, brighter, and possibly even bionic.
Fountain Renovation: What’s Actually Happening?
Apparently, even the world’s largest performing fountain needs a little “me time.” Emaar, the folks behind half the skyline, have confirmed that the Dubai Fountain is currently undergoing a complete makeover. Think less ‘slap on some waterproof mascara’ and more ‘rip out the entire lake and rebuild it from scratch’. Yes, the entire 30-acre artificial Burj Khalifa Lake has been drained. It’s giving empty swimming pool vibes, but with less sadness and more anticipation. The first order of business? Removing the old cracked flooring and replacing it with something chicer and more durable. We mean, glossier, shinier, and better at insulating water, because even fountains deserve radiant skin and solid foundations.

When’s the Dubai Fountain Show back?
Pencil this in with the same urgency you’d reserve for a 3-day supersale. October 1 is the magical date. That’s when our favourite aquatic showgirl is expected to be back in action – faster, louder, and with more pizzazz.

And if there’s one thing we know about Dubai, it’s that “good enough” is never good enough. So when they say “upgrade,” you better believe it’s not just a fresh coat of paint and a couple of LED bulbs.
So… What’s New At The Dubai Fountain?
Let’s start with the basics. The new Dubai Fountain will have:
- Advanced tech that would make even Iron Man jealous.
- Enhanced sound systems so that your favourite Arabic, Bollywood, and classical anthems hit just right.
- Improved lighting for that perfect shimmer when you’re taking selfies with the Burj in the background.
- And get this, robots. Actual robots will control the choreography and lighting, meaning every fountain show will be a precisely orchestrated spectacle. Basically, it’s Cirque du Soleil meets Terminator, with a splash of Swan Lake.
The original setup could shoot 22,000 gallons of water into the sky up to 140 metres high. That’s taller than your standard ego in the influencer crowd. And now? Expect it to be even more spectacular with jets, lights, and music synced tighter than a Spanx bodysuit.
Hey, There’s More (Obviously)
Emaar is also upgrading the surrounding area, including new screen installations near Dubai Mall and the Burj Khalifa. Because if you’re going to take a fountain offline, you’d better compensate with some visual candy, right?
The idea is to make the entire Burj Lake zone more immersive, more interactive, and, let’s face it, more Instagrammable. So even if you miss the October 1 show, you can still strut along the promenade and soak in the ambiance while pretending you’re in a perfume commercial.
5 Things You Probably Didn’t Know About The Dubai Fountain
Yup, Dubai residents are so used to seeing the Dubai fountain every now and then (until a few months ago), that we’ve literally taken it for granted all these years. Bring a tourist to the show and he’d be watching it gobsmacked, with their jaw on the floor, utterly mesmerized by its beauty. Anyway, trivia time! Here are a few things that you probably didn’t know about the Dubai Fountain:
- In the Summer of 2008, Emaar kicked off a competition for Dubai residents to give the fountain a name. They had annunced a cash prize of AED 100,000 for the winning entry. Three months later, the contest wrapped up with around 4000 entries. And guess what, 15 of the 4000 entries suggested “Dubai fountain”. Pretty obvious name there, but I’m curious about what the other 3885 names were!
- The abra ride on Burj Lake, or the Fountain Lake as it was referred to in the initial years, first began in 2013. Catching the fountain show from the abra was and is still a one-of-its-kind experience! And, we can’t wait to experience it again!
- The waterworks of Dubai fountain has the capacity to reach up to not 10, not 20, not 30, but 50 (I know!!) stories. Realistically, that would be enough to reach 20% of Burj Khalifa.
- If you were around in 2010, you’d surely have heard that The Baba Yetu, a track that the Dubai fountains had danced to, ended up being nominated for a Grammy Award the same year. It also went down in history as the first ever song from a video game (Civilization IV) to clinch a Grammy.
- Not many would know that the brains behind The Dubai Fountain are none other than WET – yep, that’s literally their name (founded in 1983 in sunny California). These fountain geniuses don’t just stop at Dubai. In fact, they’re also the masterminds behind the iconic Fountains of Bellagio. And also the fiery Mirage Volcano in Las Vegas, plus a glittering list of water wonders splashed across the globe.
The Wait Is Almost Over!
So, yes, mark October 1 with a big, sparkly highlighter. The Dubai Fountain is coming back, and she’s bringing lasers, lights, music, and possibly robot backup dancers.
As for now? Take this as a metaphor for life: sometimes you have to drain the lake to make room for something even more spectacular. Or at least, something that can shoot water 150 metres in the air without cracking the floor.
