UAE El Nino weather forecast

Is El Niño Expected To Affect Weather In The UAE?

You’ve probably seen the term “El Niño” floating around lately, maybe paired with a slightly dramatic weather forecast. Despite it happening thousands of kilometres, literally brewing in the Pacific Ocean, its still got people wondering what it could mean for our skies here in the UAE. But before you go and pull out your umbrella from storage, here’s what’s actually going on. Keep reading for all the details you need to know.

Okay, But What Even Is El Niño?

Think of El Niño as the “warm mood” of the Pacific Ocean. It’s part of a natural cycle called ENSO (El Niño-Southern Oscillation), where sea temperatures in the central and eastern Pacific heat up more than usual. This in turn, shakess up wind patterns and rainfall around the globe. And it’s not a one-off event either. This weather phenomenal shows up every two to seven years, and usually sticks around for nine to 12 months. Typically kicking off between March-June and peaking between November-February.

This year’s version is a big one. NOAA has clocked sea-surface temperatures in parts of the eastern Pacific running more than 3°C above normal. With the key Niño 3.4 index sitting at 1.8°C. And it’s not going anywhere fast. The World Meteorological Organisation puts the odds of El Niño lasting through February 2027 at almost 100%. While US forecasters give it a 90+% chance of reaching “strong” status this autumn and winter.

So How’s It Shaking Up The Rest Of The World?

Here’s the thing about El Niño, it doesn’t hit every country the same way. It’s more like a global remix, changing the tune depending on where you are.

  • Southeast Asia is looking at a higher chance of below-normal rainfall and warmer-than-usual temperatures through September to November 2026.
  • South Asia often sees a weaker monsoon, and India is already dealing with a disappointing 2026 monsoon season.
  • The Greater Horn of Africa usually gets the opposite treatment, with wetter conditions expected between October and December.
  • The Americas see their own shifts too. With more rain forecast for parts of the southern US and changing patterns across South America.

On top of all this, El Niño is piling onto an already scorching global climate. Copernicus confirmed August 2026 tied for the hottest August ever recorded, though scientists are quick to point out that human-driven climate change is still the main force behind long-term warming.

Alright, So What About Us Here In The UAE?

Good news is we’re nowhere near the Pacific, so El Niño doesn’t call the shots on our day-to-day weather directly. Its influence travels here through much bigger atmospheric patterns, and it’s expected to really make itself known from autumn onwards. UAE’s National Center of Meteorology (NCM) suggests that we will only feel El Niño’s effect will be felt over our region around October and November. There is also a possibility that the phenomenon could bump up moisture levels and raise the odds of rain here. But that is also subject to local factors, also.

Here’s the important bit though, and the NCM has been very clear about it. In a statement issued on September 11, the authority confirmed this year’s El Niño is “very strong.” But described it as a sign of beneficial rainfall, not a red flag for disaster. That rainfall might occasionally come with heavier bursts if the right local conditions line up, but El Niño alone isn’t a green light for floods or extreme storms for the country.

Final Verdict – Should You Actually Be Worried?

Short answer is not because of El Niño. While it raises the chances of certain weather patterns, but a strong El Niño doesn’t automatically spell trouble for every country it touches. Even the WMO says the strength of El Niño by itself doesn’t determine how bad (or mild) its impact will be in any one place. Other ocean and atmospheric factors play a role too.

The NCM has also pushed back on viral social media posts predicting severe floods tied directly to El Niño, and residents are being urged to stick to official forecasts rather than online rumours.
