In Dubai, people talk about the moon a lot. Not the one in the sky – though that too, occasionally, when it rises large and ethereally behind the skyline. No, this moon is different. This one is made of concrete and imagination, a building shaped like the moon, costing AED 5 billion and occupying a strange space between fiction and architectural ambition. And yet, here we all are, talking about it again, that Dubai is planning to build a ginormous moon. Or… maybe not. The internet can’t decide. Naturally, I dropped everything (including my tea) to investigate.

Where Did This All Start?
The moon project first made waves in 2022, when Moon World resorts floated the idea in the UAE media. A Canadian named Michael Henderson came up with this wild idea: to build a ‘moon’ on top of a 30-metre building. Why? Because… Dubai. That’s it! Anyway, it was supposed to be a resort, a marvel, a symbol of hope or progress or maybe just the next big Instagram backdrop. The Canadian entrepreneur’s concept was to create a 274 metre ‘replica’ of the moon on top a 30-meter building. While there is no explicit mention of the location, there is just a general reference to it being in ‘Dubai city’. The idea floated into the media and never quite left. Honestly, fair play to him – if any city’s going to build a moon, it’s this one.

So… Why Are People Talking About It Now?
The rumor started swirling again after a blog post about the moon project appeared on Damac Properties’ website. People assumed it was a sign that construction was finally about to begin. And the netizens? Lost. Their. Minds. TikTok got involved. Twitter/X exploded. “Moon’s landing in Dubai!!” they said. Everyone was pointing at the skyline like that Leonardo DiCaprio meme. Damac clarified saying, “Sorry lads, we’re not building any moons. It was just a blog post.” Still, the idea clung to people. It’s easy to get attached to things like this in a city where the skyline feels like a running list of things that shouldn’t exist, but do anyway.

Now, Where Would the Moon Even Go?
Apparently, the old Dubai Pearl site is now the prime suspect. It’s this big chunk of reclaimed land in the Tecom area that was meant to be home to another mega project but got shelved. And now? It’s sitting there like a blank page while folks are now speculating this reclaimed space might be the perfect landing pad for our dreamy lunar friend. Different versions of what this so-called ‘moon’ might look like on Dubai’s skyline have been swirling around media and social feeds for a while now.
Is It Actually Going to Happen?
Short answer? No one knows.
Long answer? Nooooo one knoooooows.
There’s no developer confirmed, no plans filed, no official launch. Just vague interviews, old renderings, and very passionate people on Reddit. So basically, it’s still a moonshot – emphasis on shot.
That said, this is a city where you can ski indoors or brunch on a yacht. So honestly? I wouldn’t rule anything out.
