The hatch is closed! Four humans start their 45-day long trip to Mars. To be honest, they are currently aren’t travelling to the Red Planet, they are just practising for the same. The four-person team arrived at their new home for the next 45 days, when they would carry out an expedition to Phobos, one of Mars’s moons. The expedition began in a building known as the Human Exploration Research Analog (HERA), which was planned to serve as a testbed for future missions.
Jared Broddrick, Pietro Di Tillio, Dragos Michael Popescu, and Patrick Ridgley are among the four members of the crew. During the 45-day journey, the crew will undertake scientific research while also dealing with the isolation, confinement, and huge delays that come with a long space voyage. The mission will be completed on March 14.
According to Nasa, the crew would encounter increased delays in communication with the outside world during the voyage. This delay will continue up to five minutes each way when the crew arrives at Phobos. Delays of this magnitude will push the crew and those directing their travel to practise communicating in ways that have the least impact on mission operations.
Scientists will undertake 15 experiments during the course of the 45-day mission, including seven returning projects and eight new ones. According to Nasa, the data obtained as part of these flights will be used to assist humans to prepare for Artemis exploration missions to the Moon, excursions to the proposed lunar Gateway facility, and long-duration missions to Mars.
