What Did The Qualifiers Look Like?
The road to the Asia Cup is no easy ride – teams had to fight hard to secure their spots. Here’s how the qualification process worked:
Pre-Qualifiers
The journey kicked off back in June 2022. 18 teams battled it out for eight precious spots to move forward. These teams mostly consisted of those that didn’t compete or advance in the FIBA Basketball World Cup 2023 qualifiers.
Qualifiers
The successful 8 joined 16 national teams from the FIBA Asia Cup 2022, making up a pool of 24. These were split into West and East regions, and further divided into groups of 4. The top 2 from each group punched their ticket straight to the 2025 Cup. Third-placed teams weren’t out yet. They got another shot in the next round.
Final Qualifying Tournament
The last 6 teams fought for survival in 2 groups of three. The top 2 in each group grabbed the final 4 spots, completing the 16-team lineup we’ll see this August.
What’s At Stake?
Aside from bragging rights, the winner of the FIBA Asia Cup 2025 will be crowned the champions of Asia and Oceania basketball – a title they’ll hold for the next four years until the next edition in 2029. For many teams, this tournament isn’t just about the trophy; it’s a chance to showcase their progress, gain regional dominance, and inspire the next generation of basketball stars.
