In an exciting move aimed at easing the daily grind for commuters, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has given the green light to a transformative project. With an impressive budget of AED 689 million, the Hessa Street Improvement Project is set to redefine a 4.5-kilometre stretch of this vital road, extending from its intersection with Sheikh Zayed Road to its connection with Al Khail Road. Here are all the details you need to know about Hessa Street’s glowup.
Revamping Key Intersections For A Smoother Ride
One of the core objectives of the Hessa Street Improvement Project is to revamp four critical intersections along Hessa Street, namely Sheikh Zayed Road, First Al Khail Street, Al Asayel Street, and Al Khail Road. The result? A doubling of the number of lanes on Hessa Street, providing a 100 percent capacity boost capable of accommodating a staggering 8,000 vehicles per hour in each direction (which was previously only 4,000).
A Lifeline For Thriving Communities
This project is not just about traffic; it’s about serving communities. It will benefit areas like Al Sufouh 2, Al Barsha residential area, and Jumeirah Village Circle, collectively serving a projected population of over 640,000 individuals by 2030. As Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General and Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, stated, this endeavour is of paramount importance for enhancing the road network infrastructure.

Seamless Connectivity For All – Bicycles, E-Scooters & Pedestrians
The Hessa Street Improvement Project goes beyond road improvements. It will introduce a 13.5-kilometre cycling track that will be a game-changer for residents and commuters. This track, spanning 2.5 meters for bicycles and e-scooters and 2 meters for pedestrians, will connect Al Sufouh to Dubai Hills via Hessa Street. It’s a lifeline for neighbourhoods like Al Sufouh, Al Barsha, and Barsha Heights, offering improved connectivity for those first and last-mile journeys. It will also link to the Dubai Internet City Metro Station and various nearby commercial and service destinations.
A Bridge To More Efficient Travel
What sets this cycling track apart is the inclusion of two remarkable bridges. The first one gracefully spans over Sheikh Zayed Road, while the second one crosses Al Khail Road. The second bridge, with its 5-meter width (3 meters for bicycles and e-scooters, and 2 meters for pedestrians), draws design inspiration from the unique geometric features of the surrounding environment.

Building On Past Success
This development on Hessa Street seamlessly complements previous phases undertaken by the RTA. These earlier efforts involved widening Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road and Al Khail Road, and constructing a flyover that connects Hessa Street, Al Khail Street, and Al Barsha to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road. This flyover has proved pivotal in ensuring smooth traffic flow to and from Al Barsha via Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, benefiting all directions, including the surrounding development areas.
All in all, the Hessa Street Improvement Project is not just about asphalt and lanes; it’s about improving lives, fostering connectivity, and enhancing the very heartbeat of Dubai’s transportation network. Get ready for a smoother and more efficient commute as Dubai paves the way to a brighter future on Hessa Street.
