Dubai announces 8 fixed, mobile cannon firing locations to announce Iftar time during Ramadan 2023.

As the holy month of Ramadan approaches, Dubai residents are gearing up to celebrate in the traditional way – with the sound of cannon fire announcing the end of fasting and the start of Iftar. The Dubai Police recently announced the location of seven fixed cannons and one mobile cannon that will travel to 15 areas across the emirate during Ramadan.

A beloved tradition since the early 1960s, the Iftar cannons have become a symbol of the holy month and represent the Arab and Islamic customs, traditions, and culture in the UAE society. Every day during Ramadan, a single shot is fired to mark the end of fasting and the start of Iftar, and two shots are fired to mark the start of the holy month and the commencement of Eid.

Fixed Cannon Locations Across Dubai

Seven fixed cannons have been installed in various parts of the emirate, including

  1. Dubai Expo City
  2. Burj Khalifa
  3. Uptown

Symbol of the Holy Month

The Director of the Security Awareness Department in the General Department of Community Happiness, Butti Al Falasi, stressed the importance of the Ramadan cannon, stating that it is one of the symbols of the holy month and represents Arab and Islamic customs, traditions, and culture in UAE society. The activities of the cannon launch will be broadcast on Dubai TV during the Iftar period, contributing to enhancing the atmosphere, spirituality, community values, cohesion, and family bonding during this holy month.

Revival of Old French Cannons

This year, the Dubai Police will revive two old French cannons as part of the Iftar activities during the month of Ramadan, pursuant to the directives of Lieutenant General Abdullah Khalifa Al Marri, Commander-in-Chief of Dubai Police. The historical and heritage value of these cannons, used in the 1960s and retired in 1970 and placed in the Dubai Police Museum, is being recognized this year.

As we eagerly await the holy month of Ramadan, the announcement of the Iftar time with the traditional cannon firing adds to the anticipation and excitement. Dubai’s commitment to preserving cultural and traditional values is commendable, and the revival of the old French cannons is a testament to this. We look forward to experiencing this unique tradition once again this year.
