News broke earlier this year that the World’s largest airport would soon be in Dubai. While most people thought that meant DXB was expanding, it shocked the residents of Dubai to find out that DXB would soon shut down to make way for Al Maktoum International Airport (DWC). Still many years from completion, it was recently announced that DWC would undergo a mega AED 128 Billion transformation to make it the World’s largest! Images of what the airport will look like post-transformation have already been released, and I’m here to show them to you. So, if you need a reason not to be sad about bidding farewell to DXB, take a look at these images to see how the future of global aviation will soon find a home in Dubai!

The Visionary Architects
Leading this ambitious redesign is the Austrian firm Coop Himmelb(l)au. Tasked with creating an airport that can handle a colossal 260 million passengers annually, they’re not just focused on capacity but on delivering a smooth, traveller-friendly experience. Their goal is to ensure that moving through the airport will be a breeze, with technology and comfort at the heart of the design.
A Glimpse Into The Future Design
The airport’s redesign will be both practical and visually stunning. The terminal will feature a unique roof designed to flood the space with natural light, creating an airy and open feel. It’s all about making passenger movement easy and stress-free.

But there’s more to the revamp than just looks. Coop Himmelb(l)au plans to integrate artificial intelligence into the airport’s infrastructure. This will mean streamlined check-ins, improved security systems, and overall smoother operations for travellers. It’s not just about the flow of people but enhancing the entire airport experience.
Balancing Tradition With Modern Innovation
One of the standout aspects of the redesign is the way it blends Dubai’s rich cultural heritage with cutting-edge technology. By working with consultants Dar Al-Handasah and Dubai Aviation Engineering Projects, the architects are carefully incorporating traditional design elements into the ultra-modern airport. The goal is to create a structure that not only looks forward to the future but also pays tribute to Dubai’s vibrant past.

Sustainability: A Top Priority
In line with today’s focus on sustainability, Al Maktoum International’s revamp will also prioritize eco-friendly design. Natural light will be utilized throughout the airport, helping to reduce energy consumption. Renewable energy sources will power the facility, and the architects have carefully considered the local climate. They’ve analyzed the Jebel Ali area’s daylight and wind patterns to ensure that the design minimizes heat and glare from the sun, reducing the need for artificial lighting and cooling.
What’s The Timeline?
As for when we can expect this aviation marvel to be ready, the timeline is ambitious. The first phase of the project, which will accommodate 150 million passengers annually, is expected to be completed by 2032. However, the full transformation is projected to stretch into the 2050s.

Once finished, the airport will cover a massive 70 square kilometres and include over 400 aircraft gates, five parallel runways, and five terminal buildings. This will make Al Maktoum International one of the largest and most advanced airports in the world.
Looking Ahead: A New Era For Air Travel in Dubai
This revamp isn’t just about expanding an airport. It’s about setting a new global standard in air travel. With its focus on technology, sustainability, and cultural heritage, Al Maktoum International is poised to become a symbol of Dubai’s vision for the future—an airport that’s as innovative as it is iconic.
