1. Swearing In WhatsApp Messages

It’s common knowledge that swearing in public is definitely not allowed, especially in Dubai, where it is considered a criminal offence. However, this charge can be taken to online swearing as well. Using any form of abusive language in WhatsApp messages, including the ‘middle finger’ emoji, is illegal under the UAE’s cybercrime laws. If convicted, you could face a fine of up to AED 500,000, imprisonment, and deportation. So maybe think twice before venting to your friends by cussing out that person who cut you off and made you late to work today.

2. Checking Your Spouse’s Phone

In the UAE, snooping on your spouse’s phone is a big no-no. It’s illegal to use any computer network or electronic information system to invade someone’s privacy. This crime can result in up to 3 years in jail and a fine ranging from AED 100,000 to AED 300,000. Respect your partner’s boundaries and privacy to avoid hefty penalties (and maybe even a potential breakup between you two)!

3. Taking Photos of Planes & Restricted Areas

DXB may seem like an airplane spotter’s dream, but taking photos of planes and even aviation accidents are considered illegal. The same goes for restricted areas like military buildings, palaces, and courts. Getting caught could land you jail time of up to 3 months or a fine of up to AED 5,000!

Always ask for permission before taking someone’s picture, especially if you plan to post it on social media. In Dubai, this is mandatory. Under the UAE’s cybercrime laws, if someone objects to their photo being taken or posted, you could face a fine of up to AED 500,000 and 6 months in jail.

5. Sharing Photos Of Accidents

Curiosity might tempt you to take photos of traffic accidents, but it’s illegal to post these images or videos on social media. The UAE’s Ministry of Interior strictly prohibits this, and offenders can face up to life imprisonment or fines between AED 150,000 to AED 500,000.

6. Spreading Rumors

While we live in an age where gossipmongers are the new norm that doesn’t mean Dubai has to sit around and allow for false and dangerous rumours to be spread about innocent people. Spreading false rumours, particularly on social media, can land you in jail for up to 3 years and fines of up to AED 1 million! This penalty applies to those who spread misinformation that could harm the public interest or disturb the peace. Even if you think you know all the facts, it’s best to steer clear from sharing anything, even possibly defamatory, to your social media accounts.

7. Fundraising Without Permission

In the UAE, you must get approval from the Islamic Affairs and Charitable Activities Department before appealing for donations and publicising a fundraiser on social media. This ensures funds go to the right place. Violating this can lead to significant fines between AED 200,000 – AED 500,000 and possible jail time.

In Dubai, staying informed and respectful of local laws is key to avoiding hefty fines and legal issues. Keep these rules in mind and enjoy a trouble-free experience in this vibrant city!
