GymNation Is Putting ‘Break Glass’ Boxes Across Dubai To Help People Escape Overpriced Gym Memberships

In Case of Overpriced Membership, Break Glass

If you’ve spotted what looks like an emergency box containing a GymNation mannequin on the streets of Dubai recently, don’t worry — there’s no fitness emergency.

GymNation has launched a new “Break Glass” campaign across Dubai and other major Middle Eastern cities, taking aim at one of the biggest complaints people have about joining a gym: the price.

The installations feature a GymNation-branded mannequin standing behind glass, surrounded by complimentary three-day trial passes and one very simple instruction: “In Case of Overpriced Membership, Break Glass.”

Thankfully, nobody actually needs to start smashing glass. Instead, passers-by can scan a QR code and instantly claim a free three-day GymNation trial.

Why Now? Because Gym Season Is Back

The campaign has landed at exactly the right time.

September traditionally sees gym enquiries increase across the region as residents return from their summer holidays and thoughts inevitably turn towards getting back into a fitness routine.

But according to GymNation, motivation isn’t necessarily the biggest thing preventing people from getting started.

It’s money.

58% Say Cost Is Keeping Them Out of the Gym

Behind the playful campaign is some fairly revealing research.

GymNation’s 2026 UAE & KSA Health & Fitness Report analysed more than 745,000 data points and surveyed over 15,000 respondents, making it one of the region’s largest studies of its kind.

The research found that 58% of people who don’t currently attend a gym say cost is the biggest barrier to joining, while 50% said more affordable membership options would be the single biggest factor that could persuade them to sign up.

That’s a significant number of people who potentially want to exercise but feel priced out before they’ve even walked through the door.

Taking the Message Onto the Streets

Rather than turning those statistics into another traditional advertising campaign, GymNation decided to make the problem considerably harder to ignore.

The Break Glass installations have appeared across Dubai, Riyadh, Jeddah and Bahrain, putting the affordability conversation directly in front of residents rather than waiting for them to start searching for a gym.

Rory McEntee, Chief Marketing Officer at GymNation, said the campaign was designed around removing the barriers that prevent people from getting started.

According to McEntee, the company’s research showed cost remains the biggest obstacle for prospective gym members, so the brand wanted to highlight the issue in a way that was playful while also giving people an immediate solution.

And People Are Actually Stopping to Scan Them

The installations have already been catching attention.

GymNation says passers-by across Dubai, Riyadh, Jeddah and Bahrain have stopped to investigate the unusual boxes, with many scanning the QR codes to claim their complimentary three-day passes.

Some reportedly told the GymNation team that they hadn’t realised a more affordable gym option was available nearby — reinforcing the brand’s argument that price, rather than a lack of desire to exercise, can often be the thing stopping people from getting started.

A Bigger Push to Make Fitness More Accessible

The campaign ties into the wider proposition GymNation has built since launching: making fitness more accessible by reducing the financial and practical barriers associated with traditional gym memberships.

And while sticking a mannequin inside an emergency box isn’t going to solve every barrier people face when trying to get fit, it certainly gets the affordability conversation started.

The Gulf Buzz Take

Gym marketing usually follows a pretty predictable formula: transformation pictures, impressive equipment and motivational slogans.

GymNation has gone in a completely different direction.

The Break Glass campaign takes a genuine issue highlighted by its own research — the cost of joining a gym — and turns it into something people can interact with while walking through the city.

And if you’re currently paying more than you’d like for your membership, you don’t actually need to break any glass.

Just scan the QR code.
