Dubai’s Newest Fitness Class Takes Place Entirely in the Dark
No mirrors. No phones. No screens. In fact, you won’t even be able to see the person working out next to you.
GymNation has launched Dans le Noir: Class in the Dark, a new 45-minute workout experience that takes place with the lights completely switched off. Inspired by the concept of dining in darkness, the class removes visual distractions from the gym entirely, forcing participants to forget about how they look and concentrate on how their body actually moves.
And if working out in complete darkness sounds slightly intimidating, that’s actually part of the point.
No Mirrors, No Judgement and Nowhere to Compare Yourself
GymNation’s idea comes from a problem that will probably sound familiar to anyone who has ever felt uncomfortable walking onto a busy gym floor.
According to the GymNation 2026 Fitness Report, 47% of people cite fear of judgement as the primary barrier preventing them from joining or returning to a gym. Mirrors, cameras and the feeling that everyone is watching can turn something that’s supposed to make you feel better into an intimidating experience.
Dans le Noir takes that problem away in the simplest possible way: nobody can see anybody.
Whether it’s your first-ever fitness class or you’ve been training for years, once the lights disappear, everyone starts on much more equal ground.

So, How Do You Exercise When You Can’t See Anything?
Before plunging participants into complete darkness, instructors guide the class through a short grounding sequence incorporating balance work, joint mobilisation and proprioceptive activation.
Then the lights go out.
And they stay out.
The only person capable of seeing inside the room is the instructor, who wears night-vision goggles to move around the class and ensure everyone remains safe and supported.
From there, instructions are delivered directly through wireless headphones alongside an atmospheric soundtrack. Participants wear weighted vests and wrist weights and move through a flowing combination of functional exercises, strength work and breathwork.
There are no mirrors to check your form in, no phone to reach for and no opportunity to compare yourself with the person standing next to you.
There’s Actually Some Fascinating Science Behind It
Training in darkness isn’t simply about making a workout feel different.
Removing visual input forces the body to rely more heavily on proprioception — its internal understanding of position, balance and movement.
Sports scientist Aderito Manuel explains that this can increase reliance on stabilising muscles that may be underused during conventional training. Without visual feedback, the body has to recruit other systems to understand where it is in space, potentially creating a much stronger awareness of movement and the mind-muscle connection.
There’s also an interesting argument for removing mirrors. Research referenced by GymNation found that exercising in front of one can decrease motivation and increase feelings of self-objectification, particularly among beginners.
Maybe spending an entire workout checking yourself in the mirror wasn’t helping as much as we thought.

Part Workout, Part Sensory Experience
The wireless headphones add another layer to the experience.
With the instructor’s voice delivered directly into your ears and an immersive soundtrack blocking out ambient distractions, GymNation describes the resulting environment as closer to meditation than a conventional group exercise class.
The idea isn’t necessarily to make fitness harder. It’s to make you more aware of what you’re doing.
For 45 minutes, there are no selfies, screens, mirrors or distractions — just movement.

The Gulf Buzz Take
Dubai fitness concepts have become increasingly elaborate, but GymNation may have found something genuinely different simply by removing almost everything.
No screens. No mirrors. No worrying about who’s watching. Just 45 minutes where your attention is forced away from appearance and back towards movement.
And perhaps that’s what makes Dans le Noir particularly interesting. In a fitness culture that can sometimes feel increasingly designed to be photographed, one of Dubai’s most intriguing new workouts is one nobody gets to see.
