The tournament kicks off on June 11, 2026, with hosts Mexico taking on South Africa in the opening match. For the first time in history, 48 countries will compete instead of the usual 32. That means more teams, more matches and a lot more football to enjoy. It’s also the first World Cup to be hosted by three countries at the same time: the USA, Canada and Mexico. In total, 104 matches will be played across 16 cities over 39 days. And just over a month later, the tournament will come to an end with the final on July 19, 2026.

How Does The Tournament Actually Work?
The tournament starts with the Group Stage. The 48 teams are divided into 12 groups, with four teams in each group. Every team plays three matches. Once those matches are finished: The top two teams from every group qualify and then the eight best third-placed teams also qualify. That leaves 32 teams moving on to the knockout rounds. From there, it’s simple. Lose a match and you’re out. The stages then look like this:
- Group Stage – June 11 to June 27
- Round of 32 – June 28 to July 3
- Round of 16 – July 4 to July 7
- Quarter-Finals – July 9 to July 11

- Third-Place Match – July 18
- Final – July 19
