Planning A Dubai Stopover? Here’s What To See And Do

Got a long layover and wondering if it’s worth stepping out of the airport? In Dubai, the answer is almost always yes (who are we kidding, you definitely have to make the most of this stopover!). With smooth visa processes, quick transport, and iconic attractions just minutes away, turning a stopover into a mini city break is easier than you think! Whether you’ve got a few hours or a full day, here’s how to make the most of it!

Considering A Dubai Stopover? Here’s How To Book One

Planning ahead? If you’re flying with Emirates Airlines, arranging a Dubai stopover is pretty seamless. From airport meet-and-greet services to flexible hotel check-ins, everything can be bundled into one package. Once your flight is booked, you’ll need to connect with your nearest Emirates office or a travel agent to lock in the details. They’ll also guide you through visa requirements if needed.

If you want a third-party option, there are plenty of local travel agents who can sort out your stopover and paperwork without the hassle. To qualify for a transit visa, you’ll typically need a confirmed hotel booking and an onward flight within the permitted timeframe.

Already Landed? You’ve Still Got Options!

Spontaneous explorer? You’re in luck! Even if you’ve just touched down, you can still step out and explore. Transit visas can be requested at the airport, subject to approval from immigration authorities. There’s also a handy option from Emirates, exclusive ‘Stopovers on Arrival’ packages available at the ‘Hotels & Visas for Dubai’ desk inside Dubai International Airport, located in the arrivals area before immigration.

Do You Need A Visa?

For many travellers, the process is simple. Visitors from over 100 countries can get a free visa on arrival, usually valid for 30 days. If you’re only staying briefly, transit visas (48 or 96 hours) are available for all nationalities. These can be arranged in advance through airlines or through your travel agent. For the latest eligibility rules, it’s always best to double-check with a travel agent or your nearest UAE embassy.

Don’t Forget To Grab Your FREE SIM Card The Moment You Land!

Need to text, post, or navigate right away? Both Dubai International Airport and Al Maktoum International Airport offer fast, free Wi-Fi through the WOW-Fi network.

Tourists can also collect a complimentary SIM card at immigration, preloaded with data and minutes! It’s perfect for staying connected throughout your stopover.

Need To Get Around? Here Are Quick & Easy Transport Options

One of Dubai’s biggest advantages? Everything feels close. Most key areas are within a 15 to 35-minute drive from the airport.

  • Downtown Dubai: ~15 minutes
  • Dubai Marina: ~30 minutes
  • Old Dubai: ~15 minutes

You can hop on the Dubai Metro directly from Terminals 1 and 3, with trains running frequently throughout the day. Fares are budget-friendly, starting from just AED 3, and Nol cards are available at stations. For speed and convenience, taxis, Uber, and Careem are widely available, and many taxis even offer free Wi-Fi.

What To Do With Your Luggage

Travelling light makes exploring easier, but if you’ve got bags, don’t worry. You can store them at left luggage facilities in airport terminals for a reasonable fee. Alternatively, services like BaggageTAXI can pick up, store, and deliver your luggage wherever you need it.
