Earlier this month, the UAE was shaken by the devastating news of a road crash in Abu Dhabi. But behind every major accident is a family with a story, who’s lives just changed forever. Entire communities even grieve together, wondering how something so horrific could possibly happen. Unfortunately, this accident managed to take the lives of four young brothers from one family.

Through this series our aim is to help prevent similar heartbreak by sharing practical reminders and safety lessons that could save lives in the future. We share these stories with deep sensitivity, and with the hope that awareness can lead to safer choices on our roads.

A Fatal Crash That Shook A Nation
The family had originally planned a camping trip to Hatta, carefully organising their itinerary like many families do during the winter season. After setting up their tents, the children excitedly asked to visit the Liwa Festival instead. Wanting to make them happy, their parents agreed and changed their plans.
On the return journey from Liwa, the family was involved in a serious road accident. Three of the boys and their housemaid lost their lives at the scene, while the fourth son later passed away in hospital due to his injuries. Both parents and their daughter survived but were injured. Days later, the pain remains heavy. Hundreds gathered at Al Warqa Grand Mosque during a condolence meeting to offer prayers, comfort, and silent support.

The UAE has some of the best road infrastructure in the world, yet road accidents continue to claim lives every year. Many crashes happen during long drives, late-night travel, or after sudden changes in travel plans. Situations most families can relate to. This tragedy is a painful reminder that even well-planned trips and experienced drivers are not immune to risk.
Prevention Lessons We Can All Learn From
1. Plan Long Drives With Rest in Mind
Sudden changes in travel plans can lead to longer journeys than expected. When driving long distances, especially between emirates, it’s important to factor in rest breaks, driver fatigue, and overnight stops if needed. Tired driving is just as dangerous as distracted driving.
2. Avoid Rushing, No Matter the Reason
Whether it’s to reach an event, return home quickly, or adjust plans last minute, rushing increases risk. Speeding and pressure to “make up time” can reduce reaction time and increase the severity of accidents.
3. Always Prioritise Seat Belts for Everyone
Seat belts save lives. In the front and back seats. Children should always be seated properly with age-appropriate restraints. Even short stretches of highway driving carry serious risks without them.
4. Be Extra Cautious on Highways and Desert Roads
Routes leading to destinations like Liwa often involve long, straight highways where speeds can creep up without notice. Staying within speed limits, maintaining safe distances, and staying alert are crucial.
5. Know When to Stop and Switch Drivers
If there are multiple licensed drivers in the car, switching drivers when one feels tired can make a major difference. Ignoring early signs of fatigue can have devastating consequences.

No safety tip can undo what this family has lost. But awareness can help prevent another family from experiencing the same pain.
