So, picture this: you’ve landed in the UAE after either (a) a summer break that was supposed to restore your soul, or (b) your very first trip here, complete with plans to Instagram every latte art swirl in Dubai. You’ve survived immigration queues, you’ve found your way to baggage claim, and then, boom, your luggage is either missing entirely or limps out looking like it lost a bar fight with a forklift. Deep breaths. Do not (I repeat, do not) fling yourself dramatically onto the conveyor belt. There are actual rules in place here to protect you.
Luggage Is The Airline’s Responsibility (Yes, They’re on the Hook)
According to the UAE’s Federal Decree-Law No. 50/2022 (aka the Commercial Transactions Law, for the nerdy among us), airlines must take responsibility if your luggage is lost, damaged, destroyed, or even late. And it doesn’t matter whether your bag was in the belly of the plane, sitting on the tarmac, or hanging out in some mysterious “storage facility”, if it was in the airline’s custody, it’s on them.
So, no, they can’t just shrug and say, “Oopsie, not our fault.”

Show Me the Money: Compensation Amounts For Lost/Damaged Luggage
Now, before you start fantasizing about being showered in gold dirhams for your inconvenience, here’s the catch:
- For luggage and cargo : the airline owes you up to AED 500 per kilogram (unless you declared a higher value before check-in).
- For small personal items you kept on you : the max is AED 5,000 per passenger.
So yes, if your suitcase was stuffed with pickles, homemade snacks, you’re going to wish you’d done that little “special declaration” thing.
Tick-Tock: The Time Limits
Airlines are big on deadlines. If you don’t shout about your lost or damaged luggage in time, they can (and will) say “sorry, too late.” Here’s the deal:
- Damaged luggage? You must notify them within 7 days.
- Late luggage? You’ve got 21 days after it’s finally made available for pickup.
Basically, don’t procrastinate. This isn’t like answering WhatsApps from your extended family – you actually have to be quick.
Step One: Don’t Leave the Airport Yet
If your suitcase is MIA or arrives looking like it had a rough night out in Barasti, march straight to the airline’s baggage service desk before leaving the airport. You’ll need to file a Property Irregularity Report (PIR), a fancy name for “Yes, my bag is broken/lost, and here’s proof I told you.”
Step Two: Collect All the Evidence Like a True Crime Detective
- Keep your boarding pass and baggage claim tags.
- Save receipts for anything you had to buy because of your missing bag (toothbrushes, emergency outfits, therapy chocolate).
- Snap photos of the damage if your bag arrived looking battered.
The more evidence you have, the harder it is for the airline to wriggle out of responsibility.
Step Three: Ask for Compensation For Lost/Damaged Luggage
Once you’ve reported the issue, request compensation. Most airlines have an official process – forms, signatures, possibly interpretive dance. If the airline plays the waiting game or flat-out refuses, don’t panic. You can escalate your complaint through official channels in the UAE. (And trust me, the UAE takes passenger rights seriously.)
Keep Calm and Claim On
Yes, it’s frustrating when your luggage doesn’t keep up with you. But at least in the UAE, you’re not left powerless. With the right paperwork, deadlines, and a touch of persistence, you can either get compensated or at least make sure your airline knows you’re not one to be trifled with.
