For years, WhatsApp has stood out as one of the few social platforms with barely any advertising. But it looks like that’s all about to change. WhatsApp just made a huge announcement – they will soon be introducing ads and new features to help the platform make money. These new updates mark a serious shift for the app that UAE residents (and pretty much the rest of the world) rely on the daily for chatting with family, work updates and everything in between. Why Is This Even A Big Deal?
Since Meta bought WhatsApp in 2014, they’ve kept ads mostly out of the picture, unlike Facebook and Instagram, which are filled with promotions. In fact, just last year, representatives from WhatsApp denied reports of ads coming to the app. But now, it’s official. Ads are on the way! But before you panic, here’s the good news – personal chats won’t be affected.
WhatsApp knows that users love the app for its privacy and simplicity, so they’ve promised that regular messaging will stay ad-free. Until now, advertising on WhatsApp was limited to businesses sending promotions to customers who chose to get them, and some small tests with ads in the Status section in a few countries.
Where Will The Ads Appear?
The new ads won’t pop up in your personal chats. Instead, they’ll only show up in the Updates tab – the part of WhatsApp where you can follow Channels and view Status updates (basically WhatsApp’s version of Instagram Stories). This section already has over 1.5 billion daily users globally, so Meta clearly sees it as the right spot for these new features. Don’t want anything to do with it? You can even switch off the Updates tab in your settings.
Here’s What Else Is Coming: 3 New Features
- Paid Channel Subscriptions – Channel owners can now charge people to subscribe to their content.
- Promoted Channels – Channels can pay to appear in the Discovery section, making it easier for people to find them.
- Ads in Status – Similar to how Instagram Stories show ads, you’ll soon see ads in WhatsApp Status too.
But Your Privacy Comes First
Worried about your personal chats being used for ads? Don’t be. WhatsApp has made it clear that all personal messages, calls, and statuses stay end-to-end encrypted. No one (not even WhatsApp) can read or listen to them. Your phone number, contacts, and chat groups won’t be used for ad targeting either. Rather, ads will only use basic details like your country, city, device language, and how you use the Updates tab.
As for when you’ll actually start seeing these changes? It’s going to be a slow rollout. Meta’s VP of product management came out to say that they will be rolling out the new ad update slowly over the next few months. So, don’t worry it will be a while until we have to adjust to any changes in UAE just yet.
