That’s right, RTA has developed a brand-new digital platform that uses advanced tech to look into your driving history and give you a score based on how you behave behind the wheel. ‘Driver Risk Score’ System
The system taps into AI and big data to analyse how drivers behave on the road. It considers key details like how many traffic fines you’ve received, how often you’ve had accidents, and any black points you’ve collected. All of this helps create a Driver Risk Score – a rating that could eventually become part of how you’re identified as a road user.
How Does The System Work?
Here’s the idea: drivers can input their Emirates ID and driving licence into the platform. Then, the system processes the data, gives you a score out of 700 and places them into one of 3 categories:
- Low risk
- Medium risk
- High risk
This of this like a school report card, but for your driving skills instead of maths and science. This information will help authorities zoom in on the drivers who need a little extra training or support to stay safe on the road.
Why This Matters More Than Ever
Dubai’s roads are getting busier every year. The population has climbed to nearly 3.93 million, and the number of Salik-registered vehicles in the city grew over 350 million from 2023 to 2024. That’s a lot of cars, which also means more potential for accidents and traffic issues. To stay ahead, Dubai is constantly finding new ways to keep its roads safer – and this smart scoring system is going to be a big part in making that possible.
Still A Work In Progress… But
At the moment, this Driver Risk Score is being used only within RTA departments. No decisions have been made yet about when (or if) it’ll be released for public use. The system is still in the testing phase, so it’s not something you can use just yet, meaning RTA is exploring its full potential. But let’s take a look at what it could mean for you If this platform becomes available to the public:
- Insurance premiums might be based on your actual driving behaviour — not just your age or car model.
- Road safety training could become more targeted. Younger or higher-risk drivers might be given extra sessions to sharpen their skills.
