What’s In Store For The Al Fay Road Improvement Project?
The RTA is investing a whopping AED 1.5 billion into the Al Fay Road Improvement Project, which is set to significantly reduce traffic for an estimated 600,000 people across Dubai. The project will involve upgrades to key roads and intersections, covering 13.5 kilometres of bridges and 12.9 kilometres of new roadwork. Stretching from the intersections with Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road, through Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Street, and all the way to Emirates Road, this is set to be one of the largest traffic improvements in the city.
Key Areas That Will Feel A Major Difference
This project will directly benefit a number of popular communities in Dubai. These 8 key areas set to see a massive traffic boost include:
- Damac Lagoons
- Dubai Production City
- Dubai Sports City
- Jumeirah Golf Estates
- Jumeirah Village Circle
- Remraam
- The Oasis
- Tilal Al Ghaf
By enhancing the road network’s capacity to handle up to 64,400 vehicles per hour, these areas will enjoy much smoother commutes, reducing congestion and travel time for residents
A Breakdown Of The Two Phases
To manage the sheer scale of this project, it’s been divided into two phases. Let’s take a closer look at the first phase and the major upgrades on the way:
Phase One: The Early Changes
- Intersection 1 – Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road & Al Khail Road
A new two-lane bridge (1,255 meters long) will be built to handle 3,200 vehicles per hour. It will allow traffic coming from Deira to make left turns onto Al Fay Road toward Emirates Road. Additional service roads will be added to increase the capacity and reduce wait times at this intersection. - Jumeirah Village Circle Access
Two new bridges (2,040 meters in total) will handle 6,400 vehicles per hour, providing much-needed access to Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road from Jumeirah Village Circle. This will make it much easier for people in the area to travel in and out of their neighborhood without facing major delays. - Al Fay Road Bridge
A key feature of this project will be a new four-lane bridge on Al Fay Road, which will significantly improve traffic flow in the area.
More Enhancements To Come
- Roundabout Redesign:
A current roundabout will be transformed into a surface intersection, making it easier for traffic to move between Dubai Sports City and Dubai Production City. - Flyover on Al Fay Road:
A two-lane flyover will be added to the service road along Al Fay Road to reduce traffic buildup. - New Intersection on Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Road
A new intersection will be created to link Al Fay Road with Sheikh Zayed bin Hamdan Al Nahyan Road, further easing access to these busy areas.
What’s Next? Phase Two
After the first phase is completed, more enhancements will be added in the second phase by RTA to further reduce congestion.
- Emirates Road & Al Fay Road Intersection:
A two-lane bridge (1,000 meters) will be built for left turns from Al Fay Road to Emirates Road, with the capacity to handle 3,200 vehicles per hour. There will also be another bridge for traffic going the opposite way – from Emirates Road to Al Fay Road – to keep everything flowing smoothly. - Direct Access to Dubai Production City:
The final piece of the puzzle involves the construction of two new two-lane bridges (2,250 meters long) that will directly connect Sheikh Mohammed bin Zayed Road to Dubai Production City. These bridges will have the capacity to handle 6,400 vehicles per hour, offering a quicker route for those traveling to and from the area.
