If you need to travel between Dubai and Abu Dhabi but don’t own a car, a new ride-sharing option is available that can significantly reduce your travel costs. The Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) is piloting a shared taxi service that allows up to four passengers to share a single taxi, potentially lowering fares by up to 75%.
This service is currently in a six-month trial phase. Passengers can catch a taxi at Ibn Battuta Centre in Dubai, with the drop-off point at Al Wahda Centre in Abu Dhabi, and vice versa. The RTA aims to provide a more convenient and affordable travel option while also addressing traffic congestion and environmental concerns by promoting shared rides.

Fare structure is designed to incentivize sharing: two passengers pay Dhs132 each, three passengers AED 88 each, and four passengers only Dhs66 each. Payment can be made using a bank card or a Nol card, provided there is sufficient balance.
“Ibn Battuta Centre in Dubai and Al Wahda Centre in Abu Dhabi were selected after a thorough analysis of potential routes for the shared taxi service between the two emirates. This initiative aims to reduce travel costs, particularly for frequent commuters between Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Furthermore, both locations are well-connected to public transportation hubs and parking facilities”, said Adel Shakri, Director of Planning and Business Development at the Public Transport Agency of Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority.

In addition to this taxi service, traditional RTA buses offer a cost-effective alternative. The E100 bus connects passengers from Al Ghubaiba Bus Station in Bur Dubai directly to Abu Dhabi Central Bus Station for Dhs25. Similarly, the E101 bus serves residents from the Marina and JLT areas, departing from Ibn Battuta Metro Station.
This new ride-sharing initiative presents a promising option for affordable intercity travel while contributing to reduced emissions and alleviating traffic.
