UAE Announces Grace Period Extension To Pay Off Visa Fines

Well, here’s some news that may bring a lot of relief to people in the UAE. Starting September 1st, the UAE has generously extended the grace period for those who have yet to pay off their visa violation fines. The grace period has been extended to 2 months and allows violators to adjust their status or leave the country without facing financial penalties. This initiative is in line with the Federal Law on the Entry and Residency of Foreigners. If this applies to you, then keep reading to find out all the essential information you need to know.

Implementing The Initiative

The Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP) will handle all necessary measures to ensure this initiative is smoothly implemented. This includes waiving fines and any legal consequences, making it easier for violators to either regularise their status or depart the country.

Reflecting UAE’s Values

In their statement, the ICP highlighted that this decision aims to offer violators a fresh opportunity to comply with the law. This gesture underscores the UAE’s values of compassion and tolerance. The specific procedures for this amnesty will be announced soon.

Residence Visa Rules

1. Visa Validity

The duration of residence visas in the UAE varies based on the type of visa and the sponsor. Sponsored visas can be valid for 1, 2, or 3 years, while self-sponsored visas may last up to 5 or 10 years.

2. Penalties for Overstaying

Anyone who fails to leave the UAE or renew their visa before it expires will face fines. As of 2023, these fines have been standardised. Residents, tourists, and visit visa holders who overstay now pay AED 50 per day, down from the previous rate of AED 100.

3. Grace Periods For Renewals

Expats looking to renew their visas are given grace periods of up to 6 months after their residence visa has been cancelled or expired. This allows ample time to sort out their visa status without immediately incurring penalties.
