As a part of the NASA Commercial Lunar Payload Services (CLPS) programme, the first-ever official artwork will be placed on the moon. This artwork was founded by philanthropist and artist Sacha Jafri. The artwork that will be flown to the moon was produced by a Dubai-based artist and was unveiled on February 23, 2022, at the USA Pavilion at Expo 2020 Dubai. It’s called ‘We Rise Together with the Light of the Moon.’
Spacebit & Astrobotic Technology Inc. will deploy the work of art on the moon’s surface later this year. The landing location where the artwork will be installed will thereafter be designated as a world heritage site that will be conserved in perpetuity.
Jafri was just granted a Guinness World Record for his painting ‘The Journey of Humanity,’ which measures 17,176.6 square feet. It fetched a whopping AED 227,757,000. This trip, too, will be for mankind, and it will be organised by Selenian, a business that specialises in the management of art in space.
Since lunar conditions are quite harsh, an aerospace-grade aluminium gold plate was chosen as a canvas by Spacebit and their collaborators, implying that it will remain on the moon indefinitely. The plate will be able to endure severe temperatures ranging from -173 degrees Celsius to +123 degrees Celsius.
