Keep reading to find out what may be the cause of this extreme heat this year and how you and your family should keep safe this summer.

In an interview, Khadijah Ahmad, operations manager at Dubai Astronomy Group, highlighted the severity of this year’s heat wave. “This year’s heat wave is more severe than the usual hot weather in the country. While high temperatures are typical in summer, this particular heat wave is expected to break records in both temperature and duration. It is an extreme event that stands out even among the typically harsh summer conditions.”
Ahmad explained that heat waves are caused by high-pressure systems trapping warm air, along with a lack of cloud cover and the urban heat effect from buildings. She also mentioned that climate change is playing a significant role in making these extreme weather events more common and intense.

The UAE group ‘Storm Centre’ has described this summer as characterised by a significant increase in temperatures and humidity, making it one of the hottest times of the year, lasting approximately 40 days. They reported that the peak intensity of the warm period starts around mid-July and continues until the second or third week of August, accompanied by northwestern winds known locally as the Al-Bawareh winds. The hot weather will persist, and the sensation of heat will intensify, especially with changes in air masses and rising humidity levels.
Make sure to drink at least eight glasses of water daily, especially if you’re outside. Dehydration can cause fatigue, dizziness, and heatstroke. Remind your family to drink water often and carry reusable water bottles to stay hydrated on the go.
Sun exposure can be tough on the skin. Use sunscreen, wear hats, sunglasses, and light long-sleeved clothing for extra protection from harmful UV rays.
Plan outdoor activities for cooler times of the day, like early morning or late afternoon. When it’s hot, seek shade or stay in air-conditioned spaces. Light, breathable clothing will also help keep you cool.
