This July, UAE will be able to witness the gaze of the all-powerful ‘Thunder Moon’. Sadly, unlike its name, the moon sighting won’t be accompanied by thunder or rain (although Dubai could use a nice cold shower right about now). But this might be one of the strongest full moons we’ve had all year. Come with me, and I’ll tell you when you’ll be able to see it in the sky this month.

Step aside, Strawberry Moon, and you too, Flower Moon – it’s Thunder Moon’s turn! On Sunday, July 21, make sure you step outside your home and look up. That’s it, that’s all you have to do. This full moon is going to shine brighter and look much larger than normal, so there’s no way that you’ll miss it.
You might be wondering why it’s named the Thunder Moon. The name comes from the natural events occurring around this time of year, a tradition started by Indigenous Americans long ago. The Thunder Moon gets its name from the likelihood of thunderstorms during this period (sadly, there will be none for us). But that’s not its only name. July’s full moon is also known as the Halfway Summer Moon, marking the midpoint of the summer season. Another name is the Buck Moon, as it’s the time of year when male deer, or bucks, display their impressive antlers.

After enjoying the Thunder Moon, prepare for an extraordinary lunar event in August. On August 19, the first supermoon of 2024 will grace the skies. This will be the first of four consecutive supermoons, with the others occurring on September 18, October 17, and November 15. The last supermoon we saw was back in September 2023, so this series is a highly anticipated event for skywatchers.
The Thunder Moon promises to be a spectacular sight, and it’s just the beginning of a series of exciting lunar events. So, don’t forget to look up at the on Sunday, July 21 and enjoy the celestial show!
