What You Can’t Post Online In The UAE

As of July 2024, new regulations in Abu Dhabi target social media influencers and businesses doing ads without the proper licenses. But that’s just one part of it – here are 7 things you should avoid posting online:

  1. No Criticism of Leaders: It’s against the law to criticize or speak negatively about the UAE President, the rulers of the Emirates, or the country’s government. Doing this could be considered harmful to the country.
  2. Don’t Spread Economic Rumors: Sharing false news or rumours that might damage the country’s economy is forbidden.
  3. Respect Local Values: Posting content that goes against public values, insults children, or promotes harmful ideas is not allowed.
  4. Stay Away from Court Discussions: Altering or misrepresenting court sessions or discussions in public meetings is illegal.
  5. Don’t Share Fake News: Spreading false news, fake documents, or wrongly attributing them to others can get you into big trouble.
  6. Avoid Criticizing Public Officials: Criticising the work of public officials or people in representative roles is a serious offence.

Serious Penalties

If you post anything that harms the reputation, image, or standing of the UAE, you could be hit with a hefty fine of up to AED 500,000 and could even face up to 5 years in prison. So, while social media is a great way to connect, always think twice before posting anything in the UAE. Keep these rules in mind, and stay on the safe side!
