Have you ever panicked because you left your Emirates ID at home but it was too late to turn back? Been there. But soon, worries like that will become a thing of the past. The UAE is preparing to launch a brand-new digital identification system that uses facial recognition and biometrics instead! The goal is to make everyday tasks like visiting the doctor, checking into a hotel, or opening a bank account much easier – sans the little plastic card in your pocket. I have all the details you want to know, so keep reading to find out more.

This new system will be managed through the UAEPASS app, which already acts as the UAE’s official digital identity platform. Through this app, residents and citizens can store and access digital versions of important documents (yes, like your Emirates ID) right on their phone. And now, your face will be the key that unlocks it all.
Right now, people still have to physically present their Emirates ID to access essential services like healthcare, banking, or even just to check into a hotel. That’s something Federal National Council (FNC) member Adnan Al Hammadi flagged as a major pain point. During a recent council session, he pointed out that even with all the digital progress the UAE has made, relying on physical cards can slow things down and create unnecessary hassle.
Responding to these concerns, Minister Abdul Rahman Al Owais, who represents the Federal Authority for Identity, Citizenship, Customs and Port Security (ICP), confirmed that the digital version of the Emirates ID , to be called the ‘e-Emirates ID’, is already being used in many government and private services. And now, there’s a strong push to bring this convenience to more industries for citizens and residents, alike to use.
If everything goes to plan, this new digital ID system could be launched within the next year! It’s a major step forward in the country’s mission to build a smarter, more connected society . Where accessing services is as simple as unlocking your phone.
