As August kicks off, prepare to witness the grandeur of a Supermoon gracing the night sky on Tuesday, August 1st. A Supermoon occurs when a full or new moon aligns with its closest point to Earth in its elliptical orbit, creating an enchanting display of lunar brilliance. During this celestial phenomenon, the Moon appears about 7% larger and shines up to 15% brighter than a regular full moon, casting an ethereal glow upon our world.
But the lunar journey doesn’t end there! On Wednesday, August 16th, a mysterious New Micromoon will make its appearance. Unlike its larger counterpart, the Micromoon occurs when the New Moon is farthest away from Earth, causing the side facing us to remain in darkness. This intriguing event renders the Micromoon nearly invisible to the naked eye, adding an air of enigma to the night sky.
As the month nears its end, another captivating lunar event awaits us. On Thursday, August 31st, the UAE skies will host a Blue Moon, the second Full Moon within a single calendar month. Blue Moons are a rare occurrence, happening once every two to three years, making it a celestial treat that should not be missed!
To fully immerse yourself in the magic of these lunar marvels, look no further than the Al Thuraya Astronomy Center at Mushrif Park.
