A kind of encephalitis is causing bears to behave like friendly dogs. Encephalitis basically means inflammation of the brain. This condition is affecting young black bears around the age of 1. Other effects that this condition can cause are tremors, seizures, a strange style of walking, ticks on the bear’s body and head tilts. One female bear with this condition was seen to be picking up an apple and eating it, she weighs about 21 pounds whereas she should have been 80 pounds.
“The first bear I personally rescued was diagnosed with encephalitis in March of 2018,” said Ann Bryant of the Bear Education Aversion Response. “She walked into a school and entered a classroom where she sat down among the children, behaving very much like a friendly dog.”
